System Not Resuming After Grid Outage

Enphase Microinverter

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Enphase microinverters wait 5 minutes after grid power is restored before resuming production — this is a mandatory safety delay (anti-islanding protection). If the system has not resumed after 15 minutes with grid power restored, check that all circuit breakers for the solar system are on.

Affected Models

  • Enphase IQ8 series
  • Enphase IQ7 series
  • Enphase IQ6 series
  • All Enphase microinverter systems

Common Causes

  • 5-minute mandatory reconnect delay — IEEE 1547 standard requires all inverters to wait before reconnecting after a grid event
  • AC disconnect (combiner box breaker) tripped during the outage — must be manually reset
  • Main production circuit breaker tripped in the switchboard
  • Multiple grid anomalies in quick succession keeping microinverters in a protective lockout
  • IQ Gateway lost network connection and appears offline even though production has resumed

How to Fix It

  1. Wait 5–15 minutes after grid restoration.

Enphase microinverters are required by grid standards to wait at least 5 minutes after grid power returns before reconnecting and producing. This is not a fault — it is built-in anti-islanding protection that protects utility workers from unexpected back-feed during outage restoration. Do not take any action during this window — the system should resume automatically.

  2. Check the AC disconnect and combiner box breaker.

Locate the Enphase IQ Combiner box (usually on an exterior wall near the meter). Open the cover and check that all breakers inside are in the ON position. A voltage surge or extended outage can trip the combiner box breaker — reset it by switching it off then on.

  3. Check the solar production circuit breaker in the main panel.

Go to your home's main electrical switchboard and find the breaker labeled Solar, PV, or the circuit number assigned to your solar system. If it is tripped, reset it by switching fully off then fully on. Do not leave a tripped solar breaker — production will not resume until it is reset.

  4. Monitor the Enlighten app for production resumption.

Open the Enlighten app and go to your system overview. Production data has a 15-minute reporting delay — even if the inverters have resumed, the app may not show it immediately. If the 'Currently Producing' figure is above zero after 30 minutes, the system is working and the earlier gap was the outage downtime.

  5. Restart the IQ Gateway.

Unplug the IQ Gateway from power, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. An extended outage can sometimes cause the gateway to become stuck in a fault state even after grid power returns. After restarting, the gateway reconnects to the microinverters and Enlighten within 5 minutes.

When to Call a Professional

If the system shows zero production 30 minutes after grid power is restored and all breakers are on, contact Enphase support or your solar installer for a diagnostic.
