Battery Not Charging
SolarEdge Solar Inverter
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
SolarEdge StorEdge battery not charging is usually caused by incorrect charge mode settings in the Energy Manager, a battery BMS fault, or the solar production being too low to charge after meeting home consumption. Check the StorEdge monitoring portal for battery state and any active alerts.
Affected Models
- SolarEdge StorEdge SE5000H-RWS
- SolarEdge StorEdge SE7000H-RWS
- SolarEdge StorEdge SE10000H-RWS
- SolarEdge Home Battery (RWS series)
Common Causes
- Energy Manager charge policy set to 'Maximize Self-Consumption' — battery only charges when solar production exceeds home usage
- Battery BMS fault or cell imbalance flagged in the monitoring portal
- Battery State of Charge (SOC) at maximum — battery is full and correctly not accepting more charge
- Low solar production during the day — not enough excess energy to charge after home consumption
- Communication error between battery and inverter — BMS data not reaching the StorEdge
How to Fix It
-
Check the battery State of Charge in the portal.
Log in to monitoring.solaredge.com and view the Energy Flow diagram. If the battery shows 100% SOC, it is full — it is correctly not charging and will discharge when solar cannot meet home demand. If SOC shows a low percentage and the battery is still not charging, proceed to the next steps.
-
Review the Energy Manager charge settings.
In the SolarEdge monitoring portal, go to Energy Manager settings. Check the charge policy: 'Maximize Self-Consumption' only charges the battery with excess solar, never from the grid. 'Time of Use' settings may have time windows that restrict charging. Adjust as needed.
-
Confirm solar production is exceeding home consumption.
In 'Maximize Self-Consumption' mode, the battery only charges when solar output exceeds what the home is consuming at that moment. If the home is drawing 3kW and the panels are producing 3kW, there is no excess to charge the battery. The battery will only charge on days with significant solar surplus.
-
Check for battery alerts in the monitoring portal.
Navigate to Site Dashboard > Alerts in monitoring.solaredge.com. Any active battery-related alert (BMS fault, cell fault, communication error) will appear here. Report any active alert codes to your SolarEdge-certified installer.
-
Check communication between inverter and battery.
SolarEdge StorEdge batteries communicate via RS485 or a proprietary interface. A communication fault prevents the inverter from seeing battery status and may disable charging as a safety measure. Check that all communication cables between the battery and inverter are firmly connected. A site visit by an installer is required to diagnose internal communication faults.
When to Call a Professional
Any battery fault code, BMS alarm, or battery not charging after confirming Energy Manager settings and solar production should be investigated by a SolarEdge-certified installer.
