What Does This Error Mean?

Micro:bit not powering on is usually caused by a charge-only USB cable or a USB port that cannot supply enough current. Try a different USB cable (data cable, not charge-only) and a different port on your computer.

Affected Models

  • BBC Micro:bit V1
  • BBC Micro:bit V2

Common Causes

  • USB cable is charge-only with no data lines
  • USB port not supplying enough power
  • No program flashed — new out-of-box boards need an initial program
  • Crocodile clip or external circuit short-circuiting the power pins
  • Physical damage to the board or USB connector
