Not Draining

Maytag Washing Machine

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

A Maytag washing machine that will not drain almost always has a blocked pump filter. Locate the filter behind the front access panel, remove it, and clear out lint, coins, or debris.

Affected Models

  • Maytag Front Load Washer
  • Maytag Top Load Washer
  • Maytag Maxima Washer
  • Maytag Bravos Washer

Common Causes

  • Blocked pump filter — the most common cause
  • Kinked or blocked drain hose
  • Drain hose height or insertion depth incorrect
  • Blocked household drain standpipe
  • Failed drain pump motor

How to Fix It

  1. Clean the pump filter.

Open the front access panel at the bottom of the machine. Place a towel and shallow tray underneath to catch water. Unscrew the filter cap slowly, allow water to drain, then remove and clean the filter of all debris.

  2. Check the drain hose for kinks or blockages.

Pull the machine away from the wall and inspect the corrugated drain hose. Straighten any bends. Ensure the hose is not pushed more than 15 cm into the standpipe.

  3. Test the household standpipe.

Pour water directly into the standpipe. Slow drainage or overflow means the household drain is blocked — not the washer. Call a plumber for the drain, not an appliance technician.

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning the filter and drain hose does not fix the problem, the drain pump motor has failed. Contact a Maytag technician for pump replacement.
