Not Spinning

Maytag Washing Machine

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

If your Maytag washing machine is not spinning, check the load balance and ensure the machine has drained fully. An unbalanced load or undrained water prevents the spin cycle from running.

Affected Models

  • Maytag Front Load Washer
  • Maytag Top Load Washer
  • Maytag Bravos Washer
  • Maytag Centennial Washer
  • Maytag Maxima Washer

Common Causes

  • Unbalanced load — clothes bunched on one side of the drum
  • Machine has not drained — water weight prevents spin
  • Lid or door not fully closed — safety interlock active
  • Lid lock on top-load models faulty or not engaging
  • Spin speed accidentally set to No Spin

How to Fix It

  1. Redistribute the laundry.

Open the door or lid and rearrange the clothes evenly in the drum. Single heavy items such as jeans or towels balled together cause the most spin failures on Maytag washers.

  2. Check that the machine has drained.

If water is visible in the drum, the machine will not spin. Clean the pump filter and run Drain/Spin to remove the water first.

  3. Check the spin speed setting.

Look at the control panel. If Spin Speed is set to No Spin or Off, change it to the appropriate speed for the selected cycle.

  4. Check the lid lock (top-load models).

Maytag top-load washers will not spin unless the lid is closed and the lid lock has engaged. Close the lid firmly. If the lid lock light flashes or you hear no clicking sound, the lid lock mechanism may have failed.

When to Call a Professional

If the machine drains fully, the load is balanced, the lid closes fully, and the machine still will not spin, the motor coupler, drive belt, or control board has failed — contact a Maytag technician.
