Not Draining

Miele Washing Machine

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

A Miele washing machine that will not drain almost always has a clogged pump filter. Open the access flap at the bottom front of the machine, remove the filter, and clear all debris.

Affected Models

  • Miele W Series Front Load Washer
  • Miele WDD Series Washer
  • Miele WCR Series Washer
  • Miele TwinDos Washer

Common Causes

  • Blocked pump filter — the most common cause
  • Kinked or blocked drain hose
  • Drain hose insertion too deep — siphon effect
  • Blocked household standpipe
  • Failed drain pump motor

How to Fix It

  1. Clean the pump filter.

Open the access flap at the bottom front of the machine. Place towels and a shallow tray underneath to catch water. Unscrew the filter cap slowly. Remove all lint, coins, and debris from the filter. Replace and run a Short cycle or Drain programme.

  2. Inspect the drain hose.

Pull the machine away from the wall and inspect the drain hose for kinks. The hose should enter the standpipe no more than 15 cm — inserting it deeper creates a siphon.

  3. Test the standpipe.

Pour water into the standpipe to confirm it drains freely. Slow drainage means the household drain is blocked — a plumbing issue, not a Miele fault.

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning the filter and checking the drain hose does not restore drainage, the drain pump motor has failed. Contact a Miele-authorised technician for pump replacement.
