Fan Not Spinning

Creality 3D Printer

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

If a fan on a Creality printer isn't spinning, the most common causes are filament debris jamming the blade, a wire broken at a flex point, or simply a dead fan after long runtime.
Power off, clean any debris with compressed air, then test the fan by spinning it manually before powering back on.
Replacement fans are 5–15 USD and a 10-minute swap.

Affected Models

  • Creality Ender 3
  • Creality Ender 3 V2
  • Creality Ender 5
  • Creality CR-10
  • Creality K1

Common Causes

  • Filament debris wrapped around the fan hub
  • Dust accumulated on the blade unbalancing it
  • Fan wire broken at the toolhead flex point
  • Fan bearing seized after long runtime
  • Connector unplugged from the mainboard

How to Fix It

  1. Identify which fan stopped.

Most Creality printers have three fans: the hotend (heatbreak) fan above the heater block, the part-cooling fan blowing on the print, and the mainboard fan inside the electronics box.
Touch the air path of each (carefully, hotend may be hot) to confirm which one is dead.

  2. Power off and let the hotend cool.

If the hotend fan is the dead one, the printer will keep heating without cooling and may already be hot.
Power off and wait 15 minutes.
Don't reach in while anything is hot.

  3. Clean the blade with compressed air.

Use a can of compressed air or a small brush.
Spray or sweep the fan blade clean.
Pay attention to the central hub where strings and dust accumulate.
Spin the fan with your finger after cleaning — should turn smoothly with light resistance.

  4. Test by powering on with a manual spin.

Some fans with marginal bearings need a kick to start.
Give the fan a quick spin with your finger as you power on.
If it runs after the kick, the bearing is dying — replace before it fails completely.
If it doesn't run even with the kick, the wiring or motor is dead.

  5. Replace the fan.

Creality fans are typically 4010 (40mm x 10mm) for the hotend and 4010 or 5015 for the part fan.
Specify 24V if your model is 24V (most newer Crealitys).
Replacement involves a screwdriver and a single connector — clearly visible on the toolhead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the hotend fan need to run constantly?

It cools the heatbreak — the throat above the heater block.
Without that cooling, heat creeps up into the cool zone, filament softens prematurely, and jams form.
The hotend fan must run any time the hotend is hot.
If yours has a thermal control option in firmware, leave it disabled.

Can I upgrade to Noctua fans?

Yes — many Creality users replace stock fans with Noctua A4x10 (24V or 12V depending on model).
They're quieter and last longer.
The trade-off is slightly less airflow, which matters for the part-cooling fan but not the hotend.
Many install Noctuas on hotend and keep stock for part cooling.
