Y Axis Not Moving

Creality 3D Printer

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

If the Y axis (forward-back movement of the bed) isn't moving, check the Y endstop, the belt running under the bed, and the bed roller adjustments.
Push the bed by hand and feel for binding.
Most Y axis issues on Creality printers are belt-related — either the belt is slack, jumped off the pulley, or the stepper pulley grub screw is loose.
Mechanical fixes solve it 9 out of 10 times.

Affected Models

  • Creality Ender 3
  • Creality Ender 3 V2
  • Creality Ender 5
  • Creality CR-10
  • Creality K1

Common Causes

  • Y belt loose or jumped off the pulley
  • Y endstop switch stuck or unplugged
  • Bed rollers too tight (binding) or too loose (skipping)
  • Y stepper pulley grub screw loose
  • Y stepper cable disconnected from mainboard

How to Fix It

  1. Push the bed by hand.

    Power off the printer.
Push the bed forward and back.
Should glide smoothly with light resistance.
If it binds at one point, that's where a roller is too tight against the rail.
If it feels loose and rocks side-to-side, the rollers are too loose.

  2. Check the Y endstop.

Find the small switch (usually at the back of the printer, near the Y stepper).
Press it manually — should click.
Confirm the wire is plugged into the mainboard.
If the switch is broken, the printer can't home Y and won't start a print.

  3. Look at the Y belt.

Lift the bed gently and look underneath.
The belt runs front-to-back between the stepper pulley (back) and an idler pulley (front).
Pluck the belt — should give a low note.
If loose or slipped off, retension through the front-left adjuster on newer models, or move the stepper to retension on older.

  4. Adjust the Y bed rollers.

There are typically four rollers on the Y carriage that the bed slides on.
Spin each one with a finger.
    Should turn freely.
If a roller doesn't turn, it's binding — loosen its eccentric nut a quarter turn.
If it spins but the bed wobbles, tighten that nut a quarter turn.

  5. Check the stepper grub screw.

The Y stepper has a pulley on its shaft held by two grub screws.
If these come loose, the shaft turns but the pulley doesn't drive the belt.
Tighten both — one should land on the flat side of the shaft.
This is a common cause after months of vibration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the bed make grinding sounds during prints?

Grinding usually means a roller is over-tight against the rail and forcing the bed to drag.
Loosen each roller's eccentric nut a tiny bit.
The bed should slide with mild resistance, not effortless float.
Eccentric nuts on Creality printers are tuning tools — don't over-tighten.

Should I lubricate the Y rails?

Yes — light machine oil or PTFE-based grease, sparingly.
Wipe the rails clean first, then apply a thin film.
Don't use thick grease — it picks up dust and creates worse drag than no lubrication.
Re-apply every few months of regular printing.
