Layer Separation

Elegoo 3D Printer (Resin)

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Layer separation means cured resin layers are not bonding to each other. The main causes are exposure time too short, lift speed too fast, and resin temperature too low. Slowing the lift speed and increasing exposure usually fixes this.

Affected Models

  • Elegoo Mars 4
  • Elegoo Mars 3
  • Elegoo Saturn 3
  • Elegoo Saturn 2
  • Elegoo Mars 4 Ultra

Common Causes

  • Normal layer exposure time too short
  • Lift speed too fast — layers peel apart
  • Resin too cold — viscosity too high
  • Incompatible resin — wrong exposure profile
  • FEP film too cloudy — insufficient UV reaching the layer

How to Fix It

  1. Increase normal layer exposure time by 0.5–1 second.

In your slicer (Chitubox, Lychee), find the Normal Exposure Time setting. Add 0.5 to 1 second and re-slice the model before retrying.

  2. Reduce lift speed to 40 mm/min or lower.

Fast lifts create suction that tears freshly cured layers apart. Setting: Lift Speed. Start at 40 mm/min. Very large prints may need 20–30 mm/min.

  3. Warm the resin to 20–25°C before printing.

Cold thick resin does not flow back quickly, increasing suction on lift. Warm the bottle in warm water (not hot) for 5 minutes.

  4. Use a resin exposure profile from the Elegoo or slicer community.

Each resin brand needs specific settings. Check the Chitubox Resin Library or the Elegoo community on Reddit for validated settings for your exact resin.

  5. Inspect the FEP film — replace if cloudy.

A degraded FEP scatters UV and under-cures layers. Hold the FEP up to a light — significant haze means it is time to replace it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does layer separation happen more with certain resins?

Yes. ABS-like and tough resins separate more easily than standard resins. They usually need longer exposure and slower lift speeds. Always use a community-validated profile.

Can I save a print that has started to delaminate?

Not once it starts. Cancel the print, clean the vat, and re-slice with corrected settings. Trying to continue a delaminating print usually ruins the FEP.
