Error E04 / Heating Element Fault
Philips Air Fryer
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Philips air fryer Error E04 indicates a heating element fault or a temperature that has exceeded the safe operating limit. Unplug the fryer, allow it to cool completely for 30 minutes, then restart. Ensure adequate clearance around the unit before the next use.
Affected Models
- Philips Airfryer XL
- Philips Airfryer XXL
- Philips 3000 Series
- Philips 5000 Series
Common Causes
- Internal temperature exceeded the safety threshold from restricted airflow
- Heating element partially failed — drawing incorrect current and triggering the safety cutoff
- Air intake or exhaust vents blocked by placement too close to walls or cabinets
- Thermal fuse blown from a previous overheating event
- Grease buildup on the heating element increasing operating temperature
How to Fix It
-
Unplug and cool the fryer for 30 minutes.
E04 is a thermal protection fault. Unplug the fryer immediately and place it on an open surface in a cool room. Wait at least 30 minutes before attempting to restart — do not try to reset while the unit is still warm.
-
Ensure 10 cm clearance on all sides.
Philips air fryers require at least 10 cm (4 inches) of free space on all sides to exhaust hot air. Do not place the fryer against a wall, under a cabinet, or on a soft surface that blocks the underside vents. Proper airflow prevents the internal temperature from reaching the E04 threshold.
-
Clean the heating element area.
Unplug the fryer and let it cool fully. Look inside the cavity at the heating coil above the basket area. Gently wipe any visible grease buildup from the heating coil using a damp cloth — do not use abrasive cleaners. Grease on the element raises its operating temperature and can trigger E04.
-
Test with an empty basket and adequate clearance.
After cooling and cleaning, place the fryer with 10 cm clearance on all sides and run a 5-minute test at 180°C with an empty basket. If E04 does not appear, the error was caused by restricted airflow. If E04 appears immediately with an empty basket, the heating element has a fault.

Contact Philips support.
E04 that persists despite correct clearance and a clean element indicates a hardware fault. Contact Philips consumer support at philips.com/support with your model number and purchase proof. Philips offers a 2-year warranty on most Airfryer models, and E04 faults are typically covered.
When to Call a Professional
If E04 appears consistently after clearing the vents and allowing full cooling, the heating element or thermal fuse may have failed. Contact Philips consumer support — this is a warranty-covered fault.
