Bad Smell
Coway Air Purifier
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
A chemical or musty smell from a new Coway unit or new filter is normal off-gassing from the activated carbon — it clears within 24-48 hours of operation. A persistent smell after the break-in period usually means the activated carbon deodorisation filter is saturated and needs replacing. Never run the Coway without its pre-filter — the main HEPA and carbon filter will clog quickly and can develop odours.
Affected Models
- Coway AP-1512HH (Mighty)
- Coway AP-1512HHS (Mighty Smart)
- Coway Airmega 200M
- Coway Airmega 300 / 400
Common Causes
- New filter off-gassing — activated carbon releases a temporary smell during initial use
- Saturated activated carbon filter releasing absorbed odours back into the air
- Pre-filter heavily soiled with pet dander, dust, or mould spores
- Machine placed in a damp area — internal moisture promoting mould growth on the filter
- Ioniser (on models with ionisation) producing a faint ozone smell
How to Fix It
-
For a new filter, run the purifier in a ventilated area for 24-48 hours. The initial off-gassing from activated carbon is harmless and temporary.
Running the machine at a higher fan speed for the first few hours accelerates the off-gassing process.
-
Check and clean the pre-filter. On the Coway Mighty, the pre-filter is a washable mesh on the back of the unit — rinse it under running water and let it dry completely before reinstalling.
A dirty pre-filter is a common source of musty or dusty smells. Coway recommends cleaning the pre-filter once a month.
-
If the smell persists after cleaning the pre-filter, replace the activated carbon deodorisation filter. A saturated carbon filter can no longer absorb odours and may release what it has previously captured.
Coway recommends replacing the carbon deodorisation filter every 6 months. In homes with pets or smokers, replacement may be needed more frequently.
-
If the machine is in a damp area such as a basement, relocate it to a drier space. High humidity can promote mould growth on the filter media, causing persistent musty odours.
Air purifiers are not designed to operate as dehumidifiers. If indoor humidity is high, a separate dehumidifier will address the root cause.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Coway use ionisation that could cause an ozone smell?
Some Coway models include an optional ioniser or bipolar ionisation feature. If enabled, this can produce a faint clean or electrical smell similar to ozone. You can disable the ioniser in the settings — the HEPA filter functions independently and does not produce any smell.
