No Airflow
Dyson Air Purifier
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Check the fan speed setting first — if the machine is set to speed 1 or 2, airflow will be barely noticeable. If the speed is high and airflow is still very low, the filter is likely clogged and needs replacing. Also check that the filter packaging was fully removed — a filter still in its plastic wrapping will block almost all airflow.
Affected Models
- Dyson Purifier Cool (TP07, TP09)
- Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool (HP07, HP09)
- Dyson Pure Cool Link (TP02, TP04)
- Dyson Pure Cool Me (BP01)
Common Causes
- Filter still wrapped in its protective plastic packaging after installation
- Severely clogged filter restricting airflow — filter lifespan exceeded significantly
- Fan speed set very low — speeds 1-3 produce very little perceptible airflow
- Inlet vents blocked by dust buildup or the machine placed against a wall
- Machine in Night mode — fan speed is capped to reduce noise
How to Fix It
-
Increase the fan speed to 8-10 using the remote or app to confirm the motor is working. Dyson purifiers at low speeds move very little air by design.
Speed 1-3 on a Dyson purifier is nearly silent and the airflow is intentionally minimal. At speed 10, the airflow should be clearly felt from several metres away.
-
Remove and inspect the filter. Confirm all plastic packaging is removed. Check the filter surface — a severely grey or black filter needs replacing immediately.
A heavily loaded filter can reduce airflow by 70-80%. If the filter looks clean but flow is low, reinstall it carefully to ensure it seats fully and does not leave gaps.
-
Check that the machine is not placed against a wall or in a corner. The inlet on most Dyson purifiers draws air from the sides or rear — leave at least 30 cm of clearance all around.
Restricted inlet airflow makes the machine louder and reduces purification efficiency even though the motor is running normally.
-
Check for Night mode or a low fan speed cap set in the MyDyson app. Night mode limits fan speed to reduce noise, which also limits airflow.
Disable Night mode and any scheduled fan speed limits in the app settings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Dyson air purifier motor fail silently?
Motor failures are rare on Dyson purifiers. A failing motor typically produces an unusual noise (grinding or high-pitched whine) before it stops working. If the display shows the machine is on at a high speed but truly no air moves and no noise is heard, contact Dyson support — this is a warranty fault.
