Filter Light

Honeywell Air Purifier

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

The red or orange filter replacement indicator on a Honeywell HPA-series purifier is a timer-based reminder that the HEPA filter has reached its rated lifespan. Replace the HEPA filter, then press and hold the Filter Reset button for 2–3 seconds until the light turns off. The indicator does not measure air quality — it counts runtime hours and resets only when you press the button.

Affected Models

  • HPA100
  • HPA200
  • HPA300
  • HPA600
  • HPA090
  • HPA710

Common Causes

  • HEPA filter has reached its rated 12-month service life
  • Filter reset button was not pressed after a previous filter change
  • Timer-based counter reached its threshold regardless of actual filter condition

How to Fix It

  1. Turn off the purifier and unplug it. Open the front grille by pressing the release tabs on each side and pulling it toward you.

The grille opening method varies slightly by model. On HPA300 and HPA200 models press the tabs on both sides simultaneously. On HPA100 the grille lifts from the bottom.

  2. Remove the old HEPA filter. It is the large filter directly behind the grille. Slide it out and dispose of it — do not wash HEPA filters.

HEPA filters are not washable. Washing them destroys the fiber structure and makes the filter ineffective. Pre-filters (the black mesh layer) can be rinsed and reused.

  3. Insert the new HEPA filter. Make sure it seats firmly with no gaps around the edges. Close the grille until it clicks.

Use a Honeywell-compatible replacement filter that matches your model number. A poor seal around the edges lets unfiltered air bypass the filter.

  4. Plug in and power on the purifier. Press and hold the Filter Reset button on the control panel for 2–3 seconds until the indicator light turns off.

If the light does not clear, hold the button for a full 3 seconds. Some models require the unit to be running (not just powered on) for the reset to register.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I replace the Honeywell HEPA filter?

Honeywell recommends replacing the HEPA filter every 12 months and the pre-filter every 3 months. In homes with pets, smokers, or heavy dust, replace the HEPA filter every 8–10 months.

The filter light came back on right after I reset it — why?

If the filter light returns immediately the reset button was not held long enough — hold it for a full 3 seconds. If it returns after a few weeks, check that the new filter is seated correctly with no gaps, and that you pressed the correct reset button for that filter type.
