Pre-Filter Light
Honeywell Air Purifier
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
The pre-filter indicator on a Honeywell purifier lights up every 3 months as a reminder to clean or replace the black pre-filter mesh. The pre-filter captures large particles like hair and dust before they reach the HEPA filter. Rinse the pre-filter under cool water, let it dry completely, reinstall it, and press and hold the Check Filter / Pre-Filter Reset button for 2 seconds to clear the light.
Affected Models
- HPA100
- HPA200
- HPA300
- HPA600
Common Causes
- 3-month timer has elapsed since the last pre-filter reset
- Pre-filter is visibly clogged with hair, dust, or pet dander
How to Fix It
-
Remove the pre-filter from the front of the purifier. On most HPA models it is the thin black mesh layer that sits in front of the HEPA filter.
The pre-filter is usually dark grey or black and made of a washable mesh material. It should be visibly dusty or hairy when it needs cleaning.
-
Rinse the pre-filter under cool running water. Gently rub off any trapped debris. Do not use soap or hot water.
Soap residue can leave odors that get pushed into the room when the purifier runs. Hot water can warp the mesh frame.
-
Let the pre-filter air-dry completely before reinstalling — at least 1–2 hours. Do not place it back while wet.
Running the purifier with a wet pre-filter can cause mold growth inside the unit.
-
Reinstall the dry pre-filter. Plug in and power on the purifier. Press and hold the Check Filter or Pre-Filter Reset button for 2 seconds to clear the indicator.
Pre-filters eventually wear out and cannot be washed indefinitely. If the mesh is torn or no longer holds its shape, replace it with a new one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reuse the Honeywell pre-filter indefinitely?
The pre-filter can be washed and reused multiple times, but it does wear out eventually. If the mesh develops holes or the frame warps, replace it. Most users get 12–18 months from a pre-filter before it needs replacing.
