Auto Mode Not Working

Levoit Air Purifier

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Auto mode uses the built-in air quality sensor to adjust fan speed automatically. If the fan speed does not change in Auto mode, the sensor may be dirty — clean the sensor inlet with a soft dry brush. Also check that Lock mode is not overriding Auto mode, and that the VeSync app is not sending manual commands that override the auto setting.

Affected Models

  • Levoit Core 300S
  • Levoit Core 400S
  • Levoit Core 600S
  • Levoit LV-PUR131S
  • Levoit Vista 200S

Common Causes

  • Air quality sensor inlet blocked by dust — sensor reads clean air even in a polluted room
  • Lock mode active — overrides auto adjustments and holds the fan at a fixed speed
  • A VeSync schedule or manual command overriding auto mode
  • Auto mode not fully activated — machine in manual speed mode that looks like Auto

How to Fix It

  1. Clean the particle sensor. The sensor inlet is a small hole or slot on the side or rear of the machine. Use a soft dry brush or cotton swab to gently remove any accumulated dust.

A dirty sensor is the most common cause of auto mode behaving incorrectly — it reads artificially low pollution levels and does not increase fan speed when it should. Sensor cleaning is part of normal maintenance and should be done every 1-2 months.

  2. Verify Auto mode is correctly activated. On the control panel, press the Auto button until the Auto indicator lights up. On some Levoit models Auto is a mode separate from the fan speed levels.

Some users confuse the lowest fan speed (Speed 1) with Auto mode. In true Auto mode, the display shows an Auto or A indicator rather than a numeric speed.

  3. Check the VeSync app for any active schedules or manual speed settings that override auto mode. Open the app, go to your device, and clear any conflicting schedules.

A VeSync timer that sets a specific fan speed will override Auto mode when it triggers. Disable schedules temporarily to confirm Auto mode works correctly on its own.

  4. Test the sensor by deliberately exposing the machine to a strong odour or burning a match nearby (safely and briefly) — the auto mode should respond by increasing fan speed within 30-60 seconds.

If the machine does not respond to an obvious pollution event in auto mode after cleaning the sensor, the sensor may be faulty. Contact Levoit support if the unit is under warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

How sensitive is the Levoit auto mode sensor?

The Levoit laser particle sensor detects PM2.5 particles down to 2.5 microns. It responds to cooking fumes, smoke, dust, and pet dander. In a very clean room with no activity, the auto mode will keep the fan at its minimum speed — this is correct behaviour, not a fault.
