Bad Smell
Levoit Air Purifier
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
A chemical or plastic smell from a new Levoit or freshly installed filter is normal — the activated carbon off-gasses during the first 24-48 hours of use. Run the machine in a ventilated room at medium-high speed for the first day and the smell will clear. A burning or electrical smell is not normal — turn off immediately and check that the filter is properly installed and the vents are not blocked.
Affected Models
- Levoit Core 300
- Levoit Core 400S
- Levoit Core 600S
- Levoit LV-H132
- Levoit Vista series
Common Causes
- New filter off-gassing — activated carbon and filter materials release a temporary smell during break-in
- Plastic packaging partially blocking the filter and causing heat build-up near the motor
- Saturated carbon layer no longer absorbing odours (after 6-8 months of use)
- Motor overheating due to a severely clogged or improperly installed filter
- Levoit placed on carpet covering the bottom air inlet
How to Fix It
-
For a brand-new unit or new filter: run the purifier at medium or high fan speed in a ventilated room for 24-48 hours. Open a window to help the off-gassing clear faster.
The chemical smell from a new filter is caused by activated carbon and binders used in the filter media. It is harmless and temporary — it will not recur once the initial off-gassing period is complete.
-
Confirm the filter packaging is fully removed. Even a small piece of plastic wrap partially blocking the airway can cause heat build-up and a burning plastic smell.
Remove the new filter and inspect it carefully — make sure no sticker, tape, or plastic film remains on the filter body.
-
Check that the Levoit is on a hard flat surface with the air inlet on the bottom or sides fully unobstructed. Placing it on thick carpet can block the bottom inlet.
The Core 300 and similar Levoit models draw air from the bottom and sides. Blocking the inlet forces the motor to work harder and can produce a hot or burning smell.
-
If the carbon filter is more than 6-8 months old and you notice odours, replace it. A saturated carbon filter releases previously absorbed odours as it becomes overloaded.
You can check the filter visually — an exhausted carbon layer may appear darker or have a noticeably stronger smell when held close.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the Levoit filter smell affect my health?
The initial off-gassing from a new filter is generally considered safe at the low concentrations produced by a home air purifier filter. If you are sensitive to chemical smells or have respiratory conditions, run the unit in an unoccupied room for the first 24-48 hours before using it in a bedroom or living area.
