Red Light
Shark Air Purifier
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
A solid red light on a Shark CleanSense IQ air purifier means the air quality sensor has detected a high level of particles or pollutants in the room — the purifier is responding by running at a higher speed. This is normal behaviour: the red light should turn blue or green once the air clears. If the red light stays on permanently regardless of room conditions, the air quality sensor may need cleaning.
Affected Models
- Shark HP200
- Shark HP201
- Shark HP300
- Shark HP301
Common Causes
- High airborne particle concentration detected — cooking smoke, dust, pet dander
- Air quality sensor is dusty and needs cleaning
- Filter replacement indicator (some models use red for this as well)
How to Fix It
-
Check what is happening in the room. Cooking, vacuuming, or a pet entering the room can spike particle levels and trigger the red indicator.
The red light in air quality mode is not an error — it means the purifier is working to clean elevated pollution. Once the air clears (usually 15–30 minutes), the light will change to yellow or green.
-
If the red light stays on permanently even in a clean room, the air quality sensor may be dusty. Locate the small sensor port (usually on the side of the unit) and gently blow out any dust with a can of compressed air.
Do not insert any object into the sensor port. A clogged sensor will continuously read high pollution even when the air is clean.
-
Check the control panel for a separate filter indicator light. If both a filter light and the red air quality light are on, replace the HEPA filter first.
A saturated filter reduces airflow and can cause the sensor to read higher particle counts than are actually present in the room.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do the different light colors mean on a Shark air purifier?
On CleanSense IQ models: blue or green means good air quality, yellow or amber means moderate pollution detected, and red means high pollution detected. The purifier automatically increases fan speed when it detects higher pollution levels.
