PlasmaWave Indicator

Winix Air Purifier

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

The PlasmaWave indicator on a Winix air purifier shows whether the PlasmaWave ionisation feature is active. PlasmaWave is optional — press the PlasmaWave button to toggle it on or off. The HEPA filter continues to clean the air regardless of whether PlasmaWave is on or off.

Affected Models

  • Winix 5500-2
  • Winix C545
  • Winix AM90
  • Winix HR900
  • Winix Zero Pro

Common Causes

  • PlasmaWave accidentally turned off — most users leave it on by default
  • PlasmaWave turned off by a previous user or child
  • User preference — some users choose to disable PlasmaWave to avoid any ozone production

How to Fix It

  1. To turn PlasmaWave on or off, press the PlasmaWave button on the control panel. The indicator light confirms the current state.

PlasmaWave operates independently from the fan and filter. You can run the purifier with PlasmaWave on or off — the HEPA filtration is unaffected either way.

  2. If you are sensitive to ozone or prefer not to use ionisation, leave PlasmaWave off. The True HEPA and activated carbon filters provide complete particle and odour filtration without PlasmaWave.

Winix rates PlasmaWave ozone output well below the FDA limit of 0.05 ppm. However, if anyone in the household has asthma or ozone sensitivity, disabling it is a sensible precaution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Winix PlasmaWave safe?

Yes — Winix PlasmaWave is certified to produce ozone levels well below the FDA and EPA safe limits. It works by generating both positive and negative ions that attach to pollutants and break them down at a molecular level. Most users leave it on. If you prefer to err on the side of caution, the HEPA filter alone is highly effective.
