Bad Smell

Winix Air Purifier

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A slight chemical or plastic smell from a brand-new Winix unit or newly installed filter is normal — it is the activated carbon off-gassing during its first hours of use and will disappear within 24-48 hours. A persistent burning smell indicates dust burning on internal components or an overheating motor — turn off the unit immediately and let it cool.

Affected Models

  • Winix 5500-2
  • Winix C545
  • Winix AM90
  • Winix HR900
  • Winix Zero Pro

Common Causes

  • New unit or new filter off-gassing — activated carbon smells briefly during initial use
  • Saturated activated carbon filter that can no longer absorb odours and is releasing them
  • Dust burning on internal heating elements (Winix models with plasma or heating functions)
  • Motor overheating due to blocked vents or a clogged filter restricting airflow
  • Foreign object (insect, debris) inside the unit contacting the fan or motor

How to Fix It

  1. For a new unit or new filter, run the purifier in a ventilated room for 24-48 hours. The initial off-gassing smell from the activated carbon is harmless and temporary.

Placing the unit near an open window for the first day of use speeds up the off-gassing process significantly.

  2. Check the activated carbon filter. If the filter is more than 3 months old and you notice persistent odours, the carbon is saturated and needs replacing — a saturated carbon filter cannot absorb odours and may faintly release what it has absorbed.

Activated carbon has a limited capacity to absorb odorous gases. In homes with pets, smokers, or cooking odours, the carbon filter may saturate in less than 3 months.

  3. If the smell is a burning or electrical smell, turn off and unplug the unit immediately. Check the vents for blockages and inspect the filter — a severely clogged filter forces the motor to overheat.

A burning smell is a sign of overheating and should never be ignored. Do not restart the unit until you have identified and resolved the cause.

  4. Inspect the inside of the unit through the filter access panel with the machine off and unplugged. Remove any visible debris such as insects or paper that may have been drawn in.

Winix purifiers draw air from the sides and can occasionally pull in small debris. An insect or piece of packaging inside the unit can cause burning smells when it contacts the fan blades.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the PlasmaWave technology cause a smell?

Yes — Winix PlasmaWave generates a small amount of ozone as a byproduct of the plasma ionisation process. Some people can smell this as a faint clean or electrical smell, similar to the air after a thunderstorm. If the smell is noticeable or unpleasant, turn PlasmaWave off in the settings — the HEPA filtration works independently.
