The red indicator ring on a Xiaomi air purifier shows that the laser particle sensor has detected PM2.5 levels above 150 µg/m3 — classified as unhealthy air. In Auto mode the purifier increases fan speed automatically to clear the pollutants. The ring changes from red to orange to green as air quality improves. A permanently red ring in a clean room usually means the laser sensor needs cleaning.

Common Causes

How to Fix It

Note what is happening in the room. Cooking, vacuuming, burning incense, or a smoker in the space will spike PM2.5 and trigger the red indicator.
Close windows if outdoor air quality is poor. The red indicator should clear within 15–30 minutes as the purifier cleans the air in a closed room.

If the red light stays on even in a clean room, the laser PM2.5 sensor may need cleaning. Locate the small sensor inlet on the side of the unit and gently blow it out with a can of compressed air.
Do not push anything into the sensor port. A dusty sensor overestimates particle concentration and stays red permanently.

In the Mi Home app you can see the actual PM2.5 reading. If the app shows a number above 50, the air quality is genuinely poor and the red light is accurate.
