Leaking Water

Bosch Refrigerator

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

A Bosch fridge with water pooling on the floor of the fridge compartment almost always has a blocked defrost drain — the small hole at the back of the fridge interior that channels defrost water to the drain pan under the compressor. Clear it with a turkey baster filled with warm water: squirt water into the drain hole until it flows freely. Water on the kitchen floor under the fridge is usually the overflowing drain pan — remove and empty it.

Affected Models

  • Bosch Series 2 Fridge-Freezer
  • Bosch Series 4 Fridge-Freezer
  • Bosch Series 6 Fridge-Freezer
  • Bosch Series 8 Fridge-Freezer
  • Bosch NoFrost KGN Series

Common Causes

  • Defrost drain hole at the back of the fridge interior blocked with ice or food debris
  • Drain pan under the compressor overflowed — usually because the drain hole is blocked, sending extra water to the pan
  • Ice maker water supply line loose — water drips inside the fridge or onto the floor
  • Door seal leaking — condensation forms on warm surfaces inside and pools at the bottom
  • Cracked water dispenser line in American-style fridge models

How to Fix It

  1. Locate the defrost drain

In the fridge compartment, remove the lower shelves and look at the back wall near the bottom. There is a small hole or gutter — this is the defrost drain. Water from the automatic defrost cycle should flow down here.

  2. Clear the drain hole

Fill a turkey baster or a large syringe with hot (not boiling) water. Squirt it directly into the drain hole. This melts any ice plug. Repeat 3–4 times. You should hear the water drain away.

  3. Check and empty the drain pan

The drain pan is a shallow tray under the compressor at the back bottom of the fridge. Pull the fridge out and remove the back lower panel. The pan should contain a small amount of water (normal) but not be full or overflowing.

  4. Check the ice maker water line

If your fridge has an ice maker, check the thin plastic water supply tube inside the freezer door or at the back of the fridge. A loose or cracked connection drips water, which then freezes and eventually causes a leak.

  5. Inspect the door seal

A leaking door seal lets warm humid air in, which condenses on cold surfaces and pools at the bottom of the fridge interior. Check the seal is seated evenly and not torn. Replace the seal if it offers no resistance when you pull a piece of paper out.

When to Call a Professional

If the drain is clear but water continues to appear inside the fridge, the drain tube from the interior to the pan may be blocked or cracked. A technician can flush the full drain system and check the tube integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bosch fridge has a puddle inside at the bottom every few days — why?

A recurring puddle at the bottom of the fridge interior is almost always a blocked defrost drain. Clear it with hot water. To prevent it from blocking again, check that food is not stored directly against the back wall where it can fall into the drain.

Water under the fridge on the floor — where is it coming from?

Water on the floor under the fridge comes from the drain pan overflowing. The pan overflows when the defrost drain hole inside the fridge is blocked and sends all defrost water down. Clear the drain hole first.

Bosch fridge water dispenser is leaking — how to fix it?

Water dispenser leaks are usually a cracked dispenser tube or a loose push-fit connector inside the door. Close the water supply valve behind the fridge, open the dispenser, and inspect the tube routing for any cracks or disconnected fittings.
