Leaking Water

Bosch Washing Machine

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

A Bosch washer leaking from the door is almost always a damaged or dirty door seal — inspect the rubber gasket inside the door opening for tears, holes, or a build-up of mould that is preventing a watertight seal. A leak from underneath is usually the drain hose connection or the drain pump filter not being fully tightened after cleaning. Do not continue using the machine while it is leaking — water under a washing machine can cause floor damage and reach electrical components.

Affected Models

  • Bosch Series 2 Washer
  • Bosch Series 4 Washer
  • Bosch Series 6 Washer
  • Bosch Series 8 Washer
  • Bosch i-DOS Washer

Common Causes

  • Door seal (boot gasket) torn, punctured by a sharp object, or hardened and cracked from age
  • Drain hose loose at the back of the machine or where it connects to the standpipe
  • Drain pump filter not tightened fully after a clean — water drips from the access panel
  • Detergent drawer leaking — too much detergent or a blocked drawer causes overflow
  • Drum seal worn — water escapes through the rear bearing seal and drips from the bottom

How to Fix It

  1. Identify where the leak is coming from

Run a short 30°C cycle and watch the machine. Door leak: water appears around the door seal. Underneath at the front: drain filter not tight. Underneath at the back: drain hose or rear seal. Detergent drawer area: drawer overflow.

  2. Inspect and clean the door seal

Pull the rubber door gasket outward and check the inner fold for tears, holes, or foreign objects lodged in the seal (socks, bra wires, and small items frequently get caught here). Clean mould build-up with a dilute bleach solution — thick mould prevents a watertight seal.

  3. Check the drain hose connections

Pull the machine from the wall and check both ends of the drain hose — where it connects to the pump at the back of the machine, and where it goes into the standpipe. Hose clips should be tight and the hose should not show any cracks.

  4. Check the drain pump filter cap

Open the filter access panel at the front bottom and tighten the filter cap clockwise firmly. A filter cap that is even slightly loose drips water during every cycle. Refit and tighten until you cannot turn it further by hand.

  5. Check the detergent drawer

Remove the detergent drawer completely and rinse out the compartments — especially the fabric softener section. Blocked softener channels cause water to overflow and run down the front of the machine. Scrub the drawer housing with an old toothbrush.

When to Call a Professional

A leaking rear drum seal means water is entering the motor and bearing area. This is a major repair requiring complete drum disassembly. Contact Bosch service — continuing to run the machine risks electrical damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bosch washer leaks only when it drains — where is the water coming from?

A leak only during drainage means the drain hose, pump connection, or filter cap. Check all three: confirm the filter cap is tight, check the drain hose clamp at the back of the machine, and inspect the hose for cracks.

Bosch washer front seal has a small tear — do I need to replace it?

Yes — a tear in the door seal will get larger over time and the leak will worsen. Door seal replacement costs $30–60 for the part and takes about an hour. A damaged seal also collects mould in the tear.

Bosch washer leaks but only on hot cycles — why?

Hot water expands rubber seals and hoses — a leak on hot cycles often means a small crack or imperfection that only opens under heat. Inspect the door seal and hose connections immediately after a hot wash, while still warm, to pinpoint the source.
