Vibrating Excessively

Bosch Washing Machine

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

If your Bosch washer is vibrating loudly, check first that the transit bolts were removed when the machine was installed — these are red or yellow bolts at the back that lock the drum for shipping and cause violent shaking if left in. If the bolts are gone, level the machine by adjusting the four feet until it does not rock on the floor. If levelling does not help, the drum bearings are worn — you will hear a loud rumbling or grinding during spin.

Affected Models

  • Bosch Series 2 Washer
  • Bosch Series 4 Washer
  • Bosch Series 6 Washer
  • Bosch Series 8 Washer
  • Bosch i-DOS Washer

Common Causes

  • Transit bolts not removed after installation — these lock the drum to the frame and cause the entire machine to shake
  • Machine not level — one or more feet not in contact with the floor, causing rocking during spin
  • Load imbalance — laundry clumped on one side during spin
  • Drum bearings worn — the bearing supporting the rear shaft of the drum has failed
  • Shock absorbers worn — the components that dampen drum movement have weakened over time

How to Fix It

  1. Check for transit bolts

Look at the back of the machine for 3–4 large bolts (usually with red or yellow plastic spacers) screwed into the rear panel. These must be removed before first use. Remove them with a spanner, keep them in case you move the machine.

  2. Level the machine

Place a spirit level on top of the machine. Adjust the four feet by turning them (they unscrew to lower, screw in to raise). All four feet must be in firm contact with the floor. Lock the adjustment nuts after levelling.

  3. Redistribute the load

Open the door mid-cycle (press Pause) and redistribute the laundry evenly around the drum. A single large item like a duvet or bath mat is the most common cause of imbalance vibration.

  4. Check the machine is not against a wall or cabinet

During spin, the drum moves slightly. If the machine is touching a wall or cabinet, the vibration transfers and amplifies the noise. Leave at least 1–2 cm of clearance around the sides and back.

  5. Test for bearing wear

Open the door, reach in, and try to move the drum up and down by hand. There should be very little movement (1–2 mm). More than 5 mm of free movement means the rear drum bearing has worn significantly and needs replacing.

When to Call a Professional

Drum bearing replacement is a major repair requiring full disassembly of the washing machine. For a machine over 7 years old, compare the cost of bearing replacement (often $150–250 in labour) against a new machine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bosch washer bangs loudly once at high spin — is it broken?

A single loud thump at high spin is usually the load imbalance correction failing — the drum is too unbalanced to recover. Redistribute the laundry and run the spin again. Regular banging every cycle means a bearing or shock absorber issue.

Bosch washer vibrates on tile floor but was fine before — why?

Tile floors transmit vibration more than wooden floors and can amplify even a slightly unlevel machine. Place an anti-vibration mat under the machine ($15–25) and re-level the feet. This resolves most tile floor vibration issues.

Bosch washer making a rumbling sound only during spin — bearing issue?

Yes — a deep rumbling or grinding sound that only occurs during spin is the classic sign of a worn rear drum bearing. The bearing worsens over time. If you continue using the machine with a failed bearing, the drum shaft can eventually damage the rear seal and cause water leaks.
