Descale Alert / Clean Me

Breville Espresso Machine

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

The Breville descale alert (Clean Me light, or DESCALE indicator) means mineral scale has built up in the thermocoil and water circuit. Use Breville's descaler or a food-safe citric acid solution — never vinegar. The full descale cycle takes approximately 30 minutes.

Affected Models

  • Breville Barista Express
  • Breville Barista Pro
  • Breville Bambino Plus
  • Breville Oracle
  • Breville Oracle Touch
  • Breville Dual Boiler
  • Breville Infuser

Common Causes

  • Mineral deposits from hard water on the thermocoil heat exchanger
  • Descale counter reached — triggered after a set number of cycles
  • Machine not descaled previously and scale has now affected performance

How to Fix It

  1. Prepare the descaling solution.

Use Breville's official descaler sachet or a citric acid solution (1 tablespoon of citric acid powder dissolved in 1 litre of water). Do not use vinegar — it is less effective and can leave flavour residue. Pour the solution into the water tank.

  2. Enter descale mode.

On most Breville models: press and hold the POWER button for 3 seconds while the machine is off to enter descale mode. Alternately, on some models the 1-CUP and 2-CUP buttons are held simultaneously. The CLEAN/DESCALE light will flash to confirm the machine is in descale mode. Refer to your model's manual for the exact entry sequence.

  3. Place a container of 2+ litres under the group head and steam wand.

The machine will dispense the descaling solution through the group head and steam wand in alternating cycles. A large jug (2+ litres) prevents overflow. Do not stop the cycle partway through.

  4. Follow the machine prompts through all stages.

Breville descale cycles have multiple stages — the machine pauses between stages and the light flashes to indicate you should proceed to the next step. Some stages require you to switch between the group head and steam wand manually.

  5. Complete the rinse cycle with fresh water.

After the descale solution is flushed through, empty the water tank, refill with fresh clean water, and run the rinse cycle. The machine will repeat the pumping cycle with fresh water to clear all descaler residue. The descale light will go out after a successful rinse.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does a Breville espresso machine need descaling?

Breville recommends descaling every 2-3 months under regular use (1-2 coffees per day). In hard water areas, the CLEAN ME light may trigger monthly. Using filtered water or a Breville water filter reduces scale buildup. Some Breville models allow the water hardness setting to be adjusted so the counter triggers at the appropriate interval for your water.

My Breville CLEAN ME light is on but the machine works fine — can I ignore it?

Do not ignore it. The performance impact of scale is gradual — you may not notice a change until the scale is severe. At that point the scale is much harder to remove and can cause permanent damage to the thermocoil. Descaling while the reminder is first shown is always easier and more effective than waiting.
