Steam Wand Not Working

Breville Espresso Machine

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A Breville steam wand that produces no steam or very weak steam is almost always blocked by dried milk residue or mineral scale. Soaking the steam tip in hot water and using a pin to clear the small holes restores normal steam pressure. Wiping the wand immediately after every use prevents future blockages.

Affected Models

  • Breville Barista Express
  • Breville Barista Pro
  • Breville Barista Touch
  • Breville Oracle series
  • Breville Bambino series

Common Causes

  • Dried milk coating the inside of the steam tip holes — the most common cause
  • Mineral scale inside the steam wand from hard water
  • Steam tip not screwed on fully
  • Machine has not reached full steam temperature yet
  • Descaling overdue — scale inside the boiler reducing steam pressure

How to Fix It

  1. Unscrew the steam tip from the end of the wand and soak it in a cup of very hot water for 10-15 minutes.

Dried milk dissolves quickly in hot water. Most Breville steam tips unscrew anticlockwise — use a cloth for grip as they can be tight.

  2. After soaking, use a straightened paperclip or the pin tool (included with some Breville models) to clear each small hole in the steam tip.

The tip has 1-4 small holes depending on the model. Probe each hole from the outside — you will feel resistance if milk residue is blocking it.

  3. Reattach the steam tip and run the steam wand for 5 seconds into a cloth or cup to purge any remaining residue from inside the wand.

This step flushes loose debris out of the wand body. Always purge the wand before and after steaming milk as a routine habit.

  4. If steam is still weak after cleaning the tip, check whether the DESCALE light is on. Scale buildup inside the boiler reduces steam pressure significantly.

A descaling cycle (see the DESCALE light guide) restores full boiler pressure and is the fix when the tip is clean but steam is still poor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I prevent the Breville steam wand from blocking?

Wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth immediately after every use, then purge it for 2 seconds by briefly opening the steam valve. This prevents milk from drying inside the tip before you next use the machine.

Can I put the Breville steam tip in the dishwasher?

Yes — the steam tip is stainless steel and dishwasher safe. A dishwasher cycle will clean dried milk from the outside, but you may still need to clear the small holes manually with a pin after washing.
