DESCALE Light

Breville Espresso Machine

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

The DESCALE light on a Breville machine means mineral deposits from hard water have built up inside the boiler and pipes. This is normal maintenance — it does not mean the machine is broken. Running the descaling cycle with Breville descaler or a citric acid solution clears the light and restores performance.

Affected Models

  • Breville Barista Express
  • Breville Barista Pro
  • Breville Barista Touch
  • Breville Oracle series
  • Breville Bambino series

Common Causes

  • Calcium and magnesium deposits from hard tap water have built up in the boiler
  • The machine's scale sensor has reached its threshold — typically every 2-3 months in hard water areas
  • Descaling was overdue and scale has affected water flow or temperature

How to Fix It

  1. Purchase Breville descaler tablets or solution, or use a citric acid solution — mix 1 tablespoon of citric acid powder in 1 litre of water.

Do not use vinegar — it leaves a residual taste and smell that is very difficult to fully flush out. Citric acid is a clean, food-safe alternative to branded descaler.

  2. Empty the water tank and drip tray. Fill the tank with the descale solution.

The exact descaling procedure varies by model. For most Breville machines, press and hold the descale button (or a specific button combination shown on the display) to start the cycle.

  3. Follow the machine's descale cycle — the machine will run the solution through the boiler and pipes in stages, pausing between each stage.

The cycle takes 20-30 minutes and requires you to position a container under the steam wand and group head as instructed. Do not interrupt the cycle once it has started.

  4. After the descale cycle, run two full tanks of fresh water through the machine to rinse out all descaler residue.

Rinsing thoroughly is important — descaler residue affects the taste of coffee and can irritate the throat if consumed.

When to Call a Professional

Descaling is straightforward home maintenance — no technician is needed. If the DESCALE light stays on after completing the full descale cycle, the cycle may not have completed properly. Repeat the cycle once more and ensure you follow all steps including the rinse phase.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I descale a Breville espresso machine?

Breville recommends descaling every 2-3 months in hard water areas and every 4-6 months in soft water areas. The DESCALE light is triggered by the machine's internal scale counter, so follow its prompt rather than a fixed schedule.

Can I use the machine while the DESCALE light is on?

Yes, but performance will gradually decline — water temperature and flow rate are affected by scale buildup. Descaling when prompted keeps the machine running at its best and extends its lifespan.
