No Water / EMPTY Tank
Breville Espresso Machine
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
If your Breville machine shows a no water or empty tank warning when the tank is full, the tank is not seated properly, there is an air lock in the water line, or the water sensor needs cleaning. Removing the tank, checking the valve at the bottom, and reseating it firmly usually clears the error immediately.
Affected Models
- Breville Barista Express
- Breville Barista Pro
- Breville Bambino
- Breville Oracle series
- Breville Duo-Temp Pro
Common Causes
- Water tank is not pushed down fully into its housing — the valve at the tank bottom must click into the inlet
- Air lock in the water line — common after the tank ran dry
- Scale or debris blocking the water inlet valve at the base of the tank
- Water filter inside the tank has become clogged and is restricting flow
- Water level sensor has a mineral deposit on it
How to Fix It
-
Remove the water tank completely, check the rubber valve on its base is intact, then reinsert the tank firmly until you feel it click or seat fully.
The tank valve must align precisely with the inlet on the machine body. A tank that looks full but is sitting 1-2 mm too high will trigger the empty warning.
-
Prime the pump to clear an air lock. Fill the tank, then press the hot water or steam button briefly to draw water through the line.
After the tank runs completely dry, air enters the water line and prevents the pump from drawing water even when refilled. Activating the hot water function forces the pump to push the air out.
-
Remove the water filter from inside the tank (if fitted) and rinse it under cold water. Soak it in cold water for 5 minutes before reinserting.
A clogged filter significantly restricts water flow, causing the machine to sense low pressure and report an empty tank.
-
Clean the water inlet valve area at the base of the tank housing with a damp cloth to remove any mineral deposits.
Mineral scale can coat the sensor or block the inlet over time. A wipe with a damp cloth moistened with a little white vinegar dissolves scale without harming the machine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the machine without the water filter?
Yes — the filter is optional and is mainly useful in hard water areas to reduce scale buildup. Removing it to diagnose a no-water error is fine.
Why does the no-water error appear only first thing in the morning?
Overnight, the residual heat in the boiler can create a slight vacuum that draws water back into the tank, occasionally forming an air pocket in the line. Priming the pump by pressing the hot water button for a few seconds before making coffee clears it.
