NoPr
Instant Pot Pressure Cooker
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Instant Pot NoPr means the pot failed to reach enough pressure within the expected time. This is almost always caused by the steam release valve being left in the Venting position, or a misseated or damaged sealing ring — not a hardware fault. Checking the lid, sealing ring, and steam valve fixes this in most cases.
Affected Models
- Instant Pot Duo
- Instant Pot Duo Plus
- Instant Pot Ultra
- Instant Pot Pro
- Instant Pot Lux
- Instant Pot Duo Nova
Common Causes
- Steam release valve left in the Venting position — steam escapes instead of building pressure (most common cause)
- Sealing ring not seated correctly in the lid groove, allowing steam to leak around the rim
- Sealing ring cracked, deformed, or hardened with age and no longer forming a proper seal
- Lid not fully locked in place — a partially locked lid lets steam escape
- Inner pot filled above the MAX line — overfilling prevents pressure from building correctly
- Too little liquid in the pot — insufficient steam cannot build enough pressure
How to Fix It
-
Press Cancel. Check the steam release valve position — it must be turned firmly to Sealing (not Venting) for pressure cooking. This is the most common cause of NoPr.
The valve position labels are printed on the lid. Sealing means the valve is closed and pressure builds inside. Venting means steam escapes freely — correct for releasing pressure after cooking, wrong during cooking.
-
Remove the lid. Inspect the silicone sealing ring inside the lid. It should sit firmly and flatly in the full circular groove with no gaps, lifted sections, or visible cracks.
Even a small gap in the sealing ring allows steam to escape around the rim. Press the ring firmly into the groove all the way around. If it pops back out or has a permanent deformation, it needs replacing.
-
Smell the sealing ring. If it has a strong food odour embedded in it, the silicone may have degraded. Try fitting a spare sealing ring if you have one — this alone often fixes a recurring NoPr.
Sealing rings absorb odours and oils over time. A ring that smells heavily of garlic, curry, or grease may no longer form a proper seal even when it looks undamaged.
-
Check that the inner pot is not filled above the MAX fill line (two-thirds full for most ingredients, half full for foods that expand like rice or pulses).
Overfilling reduces the steam space above the food and can prevent the unit from reaching pressure within the NoPr timeout.
-
Ensure there is at least 1 cup (240ml) of thin liquid in the pot. Lock the lid, set the valve to Sealing, and restart the pressure cook program.
During the pressure build phase, some steam escaping from the valve or lid rim is normal at first. Once sealed properly, it will stop and the pressure will build.
When to Call a Professional
NoPr is almost never a hardware fault. If the error persists after checking the valve, sealing ring, lid, and liquid level — and after fitting a brand new sealing ring — the lid float valve may be stuck or the lid itself may be damaged. Contact Instant Pot support.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should it take for Instant Pot to reach pressure?
Typically 5–15 minutes depending on the quantity of food and liquid. A large pot of cold liquid takes longer than a small amount. If the unit is still showing the pressure-building display after 20–25 minutes without reaching pressure, NoPr will appear. Check the valve and sealing ring first.
How often should I replace the Instant Pot sealing ring?
Replace the sealing ring every 12–18 months under regular use, or sooner if it is cracked, stiff, or has absorbed strong odours that transfer to food. Instant Pot sells official replacement rings for a few dollars — keep a spare so you are never stuck when NoPr appears.
