No Sound
Samsung Soundbar
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
A Samsung soundbar with no sound is usually caused by the input source set incorrectly, the soundbar muted, or the TV audio output not configured to send sound to the soundbar. Press the Source button on the soundbar remote to cycle through inputs and check the TV's audio output settings.
Affected Models
- Samsung Q990D
- Samsung Q800D
- Samsung HW-Q series
- Samsung HW-B series
- Samsung HW-S series
- Samsung HW-A series
Common Causes
- Wrong input source selected on the soundbar
- Soundbar muted — single button press mutes all audio
- TV audio output not set to HDMI ARC or external speakers
- HDMI ARC handshake failed — TV sending audio to its own speakers
- Bluetooth connected but no audio playing from the source device
- Volume at zero on the soundbar
How to Fix It
-
Check the source selection on the soundbar.
Press the Source button (or D.IN button) on the soundbar or remote. Cycle through D.IN (optical), HDMI (ARC), Bluetooth, and WiFi until you reach the input matching your connection. The soundbar display shows the active input name.
-
Check the soundbar is not muted.
Press the Mute button on the soundbar remote. On Samsung soundbars, a single mute press silences all audio. The soundbar display or LED may show a mute indicator — pressing mute again restores audio.
-
Check the TV audio output settings.
On your Samsung TV: go to Settings > Sound > Sound Output. Change it from TV Speaker to the soundbar (if listed as a named device via HDMI ARC) or to External Speaker. If the TV is set to TV Speaker, audio plays through the TV's built-in speakers and the soundbar receives nothing.
-
Test with a direct optical cable connection.
Connect an optical (TOS-link) cable from the TV's optical output to the soundbar's optical input. Set the soundbar source to D.IN (optical). If audio works via optical but not HDMI ARC, the HDMI ARC connection has a fault — see the HDMI ARC Not Working troubleshooting.
-
Power cycle both the TV and soundbar.
Turn both devices completely off (not standby). Unplug both from the wall for 30 seconds. Plug the TV in first, wait for it to fully boot, then plug in the soundbar. This resets the HDMI ARC handshake between the two devices.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Samsung soundbar have no sound with HDMI ARC?
HDMI ARC requires CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) to be enabled on both the TV and soundbar. On a Samsung TV: Settings > General > External Device Manager > Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) must be ON. If CEC is disabled, the TV does not communicate with the soundbar over HDMI ARC and audio stays on the TV speakers.
My Samsung soundbar turns on when the TV turns on but produces no sound — why?
The soundbar powering on with the TV (via Anynet+) confirms CEC is working. But audio not playing means the TV is still routing sound to its own speakers. Go to TV Settings > Sound > Sound Output and manually select the soundbar as the output device. This setting sometimes reverts after TV firmware updates.
