Guardian Not Working

Meta VR Headset

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Guardian is Meta's safety boundary system. If it keeps resetting, won't save, or shows an error, the most common causes are poor lighting in the room or the headset not recognising the space. Improve lighting and redraw the boundary.

Affected Models

  • Meta Quest 2
  • Meta Quest 3
  • Meta Quest 3S
  • Meta Quest Pro

Common Causes

  • Room too dark for the headset cameras to map the space
  • Space changed significantly since the last Guardian save (furniture moved)
  • Too many saved Guardian spaces causing confusion
  • Headset moved to a new location it doesn't recognise
  • Software bug clearing saved boundaries after an update

How to Fix It

  1. Improve the lighting in the room.

Guardian uses the headset's cameras to map your space. The room must be evenly lit — not too dark, not with harsh direct sunlight creating deep shadows. Turn on overhead lights.

  2. Draw a new Guardian boundary.

When prompted, draw a new stationary boundary by tracing the floor around your safe area. Stand in the centre of your play space and draw a generous boundary away from walls and furniture.

  3. Clear saved Guardian data.

Go to Settings → Guardian → Clear Guardian History. Too many saved spaces can confuse the system. Clearing history forces a fresh map of your current space.

  4. Add visual features to the space.

Blank, featureless walls (plain white rooms) make it very hard for the cameras to track. Add posters, objects, or varied textures to help the cameras identify the space.

  5. Update the headset firmware.

Go to Settings → System → Software Update. Guardian bugs are frequently fixed in updates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Meta Quest without setting up Guardian?

Yes — you can use Stationary mode, which sets a smaller invisible boundary and doesn't require drawing a full room-scale boundary. This is useful if Guardian keeps failing. Select Stationary when prompted during setup.
