Tracking Lost
Meta VR Headset
Severity: ModerateWhat it means
Tracking Lost means the Quest's cameras lost their position reference.
It usually happens in low light, when facing a featureless wall, or when the cameras are dirty.
Improve lighting and clean the lenses.
Affected Models
- Meta Quest 2
- Meta Quest 3
- Meta Quest 3S
- Meta Quest Pro
Common Causes
- Room too dark for the inside-out tracking cameras
- Facing a plain featureless wall with no visual reference points
- Camera lenses dirty or smudged
- Moving too fast for the tracking system
- Direct sunlight hitting the external cameras
- Standing near mirrors (causes tracking confusion)
How to Fix It
-
Improve room lighting.
The Quest uses camera-based tracking — it needs to see the room.
Turn on overhead lights.
Avoid playing in a room lit only by the TV or a single lamp. -
Clean the external camera lenses.
The Quest 3 has colour passthrough cameras on the front.
Smudges and dust cause tracking errors.
Clean gently with a dry microfibre cloth. -
Add visual texture to the walls.
Plain white walls give the cameras nothing to track against.
Posters, bookshelves, or any varied surfaces help enormously. -
Avoid direct sunlight and mirrors.
Direct sunlight can permanently damage the Quest's cameras.
Mirrors confuse the tracking system by duplicating the room.
Play away from windows and mirrors. -
Slow down movement if tracking is lost during fast turns.
Extremely fast head rotations can momentarily lose tracking.
This is normal in very fast-paced games — it self-recovers when movement slows.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can direct sunlight damage the Quest cameras?
