Hand Tracking Not Working
Meta VR Headset
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Meta Quest hand tracking relies on the headset's cameras to see your hands. If it's not working, the room is likely too dark, your hands are moving too fast, or hand tracking is disabled in settings.
Affected Models
- Meta Quest 2
- Meta Quest 3
- Meta Quest 3S
- Meta Quest Pro
Common Causes
- Hand tracking disabled in Settings
- Room lighting too low for the cameras to detect hands
- Gloves, dark sleeves, or rings confusing the hand detection
- Hands moving too fast or too close to the headset
- Background too similar in colour to skin tone
- Cameras dirty or smudged
How to Fix It
-
Enable Hand Tracking in Settings.
Settings → Movement Tracking → Hand Tracking → toggle On. Also enable Auto Switch Between Controllers and Hands for the best experience.
-
Improve room lighting.
Hand tracking needs good, even light. Turn on overhead lights. Avoid playing with only a lamp or TV as the light source — uneven lighting creates shadows that confuse the cameras.
-
Remove gloves, rings, or jewellery on your hands.
Gloves completely block hand detection. Large rings and bracelets can confuse finger tracking. Bare hands work best.
-
Move your hands more slowly and deliberately.
Fast hand movements blur in the camera and lose tracking. Hand tracking works best with deliberate, not-too-fast gestures. If a game requires very fast hand movements, controllers will perform better.
-
Clean the external cameras.
Smudged cameras struggle to detect fine hand details. Wipe gently with a dry microfibre cloth — the cameras are on the front and sides of the headset.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is hand tracking as good as controllers on Meta Quest?
For casual navigation and some apps, hand tracking is excellent. For gaming — especially fast-paced or precision games — Touch controllers are significantly better. Hand tracking does not provide haptic feedback (vibration) which controllers do.
Does hand tracking work in all Quest apps?
No — hand tracking support depends on the app. Meta's own system menus support it. Many third-party games only support controllers. Check the app's description in the Meta Store for hand tracking support.
