Passthrough Not Working

Meta VR Headset

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Passthrough lets you see the real world through the Quest's cameras. If it's not working, check the double-tap gesture is enabled, the cameras are clean, and the lighting isn't too dark or too bright.

Affected Models

  • Meta Quest 2
  • Meta Quest 3
  • Meta Quest 3S
  • Meta Quest Pro

Common Causes

  • Double-tap gesture disabled in settings
  • Cameras dirty or smudged
  • Room too dark or too bright (direct sunlight) for the cameras
  • Passthrough feature disabled in the app you're using
  • Quest 2 passthrough is black-and-white by design — not a fault

How to Fix It

  1. Enable the double-tap gesture to activate passthrough.

Settings → Movement Tracking → Double Tap for Passthrough → toggle On. Once enabled, double-tap the side of the headset to instantly switch to passthrough view.

  2. Note: Quest 2 passthrough is black-and-white.

The Quest 2 has greyscale passthrough cameras — this is normal, not a fault. Only the Quest 3, Quest 3S, and Quest Pro have full-colour passthrough. If you expected colour on a Quest 2, that's why.

  3. Clean the external cameras.

Fingerprints and smudges on the passthrough cameras create a blurry or distorted view. Wipe the front camera lenses gently with a dry microfibre cloth.

  4. Improve room lighting.

Passthrough needs adequate light to see clearly. In a dark room the image will be grainy or barely visible. Direct sunlight can blow out the image completely — indirect light works best.

  5. Check if the app supports passthrough mixed reality.

Not all apps support passthrough. Apps that use passthrough will enable it automatically. In a standard VR app, you can only access passthrough by double-tapping the headset (if enabled).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Quest 3 passthrough much better than Quest 2?

The Quest 3 has high-resolution colour cameras specifically designed for mixed reality. The Quest 2's cameras were designed for inside-out tracking, not passthrough viewing — colour and resolution were not priorities. The difference is significant: Quest 3 passthrough is sharp and colourful; Quest 2 is blurry and black-and-white.
