No Audio

Sony PSVR2

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Check the PS5 audio output setting — it must be set to route audio through the PSVR2 headset, not the TV. Go to Settings → Sound → Audio Output → Output Device and select the PSVR2 headset.

Affected Models

  • PlayStation VR2

Common Causes

  • PS5 audio output still set to TV or soundbar instead of the PSVR2 headset
  • Volume set to zero on the PSVR2 headset cable volume control
  • PSVR2 cable not fully seated in the PS5 USB-C port
  • Game configured to output to TV speakers in its own audio settings
  • Firmware bug affecting audio initialisation

How to Fix It

  1. Set PS5 audio output to the PSVR2 headset.

Settings → Sound → Audio Output → Output Device → select PSVR2 Headset. When the PSVR2 is connected, it appears as an audio output device. This setting is not changed automatically when you put on the headset.

  2. Check the in-headset volume control.

PSVR2 has a volume dial or button on the headset cable — usually about 30 cm from the headset. Make sure it has not been turned to zero.

  3. Reseat the PSVR2 USB-C cable.

Unplug the PSVR2 USB-C cable from the front of the PS5 and firmly reinsert it. A loose connection can cause the PS5 to detect the headset as a display but not as an audio device.

  4. Check in-game audio settings.

Some PSVR2 games have their own audio output setting in the pause menu or options. Confirm the game is set to use VR headset audio and not TV speakers.

  5. Update the PSVR2 firmware.

On PS5: Settings → Accessories → PSVR2 → Firmware Version. Update if available. Sony has released updates that fix audio initialisation issues.

When to Call a Professional

If no audio is heard from the headset after correcting all settings and the headset speaker is confirmed faulty, contact Sony PlayStation support for warranty service.

Frequently Asked Questions

PSVR2 shows picture but has no sound — is that a cable issue?

PSVR2 uses a single USB-C cable for both video and audio. If picture is working but audio is not, the cable is fine — the issue is in the PS5 audio output settings. Change the output device to the PSVR2 headset in Settings → Sound.

Can I use external headphones with PSVR2?

Yes — PSVR2 has a 3.5mm headphone jack on the headset cable. Plug in any wired headphones or earbuds for audio. The PS5 automatically routes audio through the jack when something is plugged in.
