Eye Tracking Calibration Failed
Sony PSVR2
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Eye tracking calibration needs a well-lit room and the headset positioned with the lenses directly in front of your pupils. Adjust the scope dial and head strap until the image is sharp, then redo calibration.
Affected Models
- PlayStation VR2
Common Causes
- Room too dark — IR cameras cannot detect pupils in low light
- Headset not properly positioned — lenses not aligned with pupils
- Glasses with certain coatings or thick frames blocking the eye-tracking sensor
- Eyelashes or eye makeup interfering with IR detection
- Dirty inner lenses or eye-tracking camera sensors
How to Fix It
-
Ensure the room is adequately lit.
The eye tracking cameras are IR-based but perform better in a normally lit room. Avoid calibrating in a very dark room — turn on standard indoor lighting.
-
Adjust the headset fit before calibrating.
Use the scope adjustment dial on the bottom of the headset to move the lenses closer or further from your eyes. The image in VR should look sharp and the lenses should be centred on your pupils before starting.
-
Remove glasses if possible, or use the glasses spacer.
Glasses with anti-reflective or photochromic coatings can confuse the IR eye tracking sensors. Try calibrating without glasses first. If you need them, ensure the included glasses spacer is fitted.
-
Follow the calibration dots slowly and steadily.
During calibration, dots appear on screen — look directly at each one and wait for it to be confirmed before moving your gaze. Moving too quickly or anticipating the next dot causes calibration to fail.
-
Clean the inner lenses and sensors.
Use the included microfibre cloth to clean the inner lenses. Smudges near the inner sensor area can cause IR reflection that fails the eye tracking calibration.
When to Call a Professional
If calibration consistently fails for all users across different environments and the inner cameras appear damaged, contact Sony PlayStation support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Eye tracking calibration always fails for me but works for others — why?
Eye tracking can be difficult for users with certain eye conditions, heavy eye makeup, very pale irises, or unusual eye shapes. Try wiping off eye makeup before calibration. If it still fails, most PSVR2 games can be used without eye tracking — it is optional in most titles.
Does PSVR2 eye tracking need to be calibrated every session?
No — PSVR2 saves your eye tracking calibration profile on the PS5. You only need to recalibrate if the headset has been adjusted, a different user is wearing it, or calibration accuracy has noticeably degraded.
