Tracking Lost
Sony PSVR2
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
PSVR2 tracking uses four cameras on the headset to map your environment and locate the controllers. Tracking fails when the room is too dark, too bright, or featureless (blank white walls). Add a lamp to the play area and position yourself facing a wall with some visual detail.
Affected Models
- PlayStation VR2
Common Causes
- Play area too dark — cameras cannot see the environment
- Bright sunlight or direct light shining into the headset cameras
- Featureless environment with uniform walls and no reference points
- Sense controllers moved out of the camera's field of view
- Headset moved too quickly for the tracking system
- Dirty or smudged camera lenses on the headset exterior
How to Fix It
-
Improve lighting in the play area.
PSVR2 needs a well-lit room — not bright sunlight, but indoor lighting that illuminates the full play space. Turn on overhead lights and a floor lamp if tracking is inconsistent in low light.
-
Avoid direct sunlight on the cameras.
Sunlight streaming through a window can overwhelm the cameras and cause immediate tracking loss. Close the blinds or move the play area away from direct sun exposure.
-
Add visual detail to the environment.
Rooms with completely blank white walls give the cameras nothing to lock onto. Add a rug, posters, or furniture to the play area background to give the tracking cameras reference points.
-
Clean the exterior camera lenses.
Use the included microfibre cloth to gently clean the four camera lenses on the outside of the headset. Fingerprints or dust on the cameras dramatically reduce tracking accuracy.
-
Keep controllers within the headset's camera view.
The controllers must be visible to the headset cameras to be tracked. Keep them in front of you — reaching behind your back or holding them very low causes tracking loss. Recalibrate via Settings → Accessories on the PS5.
When to Call a Professional
If tracking fails consistently in all environments with clean cameras and good lighting, the camera modules may be faulty. Contact Sony PlayStation support.
Frequently Asked Questions
PSVR2 tracking works fine then suddenly drops — what causes that?
Sudden tracking drops are usually caused by a large change in lighting — a cloud passing the sun, someone switching on a TV, or a camera being briefly covered. Consistent drops suggest a camera lens issue or environment problem.
Can I use PSVR2 in a small room?
Yes — PSVR2 works in smaller rooms than the original PSVR1. Sony recommends at least 2m × 2m of clear space for room-scale games. Ensure all four cameras on the headset can see some of the room.
