P0722
Universal (All Makes) Vehicle (OBD-II)
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
P0722 means the Output Speed Sensor is sending no signal at all to the TCM — the transmission cannot tell how fast it is turning. Limp mode usually activates immediately. The speedometer typically reads 0 mph and shifts feel firm or stop happening altogether. This is one of the more disruptive transmission codes.
Affected Models
- All vehicles 1996+ with automatic transmissions
- Common in GM trucks with 4L60E/4L80E
- Common in Ford F-150 with 6R80
- Common in Toyota and Lexus with A750/AB60
Common Causes
- Failed OSS sensor (open-circuit failure)
- Disconnected or damaged sensor connector
- Broken wire between sensor and TCM
- Severely damaged reluctor/tone ring (often after a transmission overhaul)
- Failed TCM (rare — requires extensive diagnosis)
How to Fix It
-
Inspect the OSS sensor connector first.
Disconnected connectors are surprisingly common after off-road driving or a recent service. Reconnect firmly. Often clears P0722 immediately.
-
Test sensor wiring continuity.
Disconnect at the sensor, ground one wire and test continuity to the TCM connector. An open circuit confirms broken wiring needing repair.
-
Test sensor output.
With the connector reattached, use a backprobe and multimeter on AC volts. Spin the rear wheels (in neutral, vehicle securely supported) and watch for any voltage. Zero output means the sensor is dead.
-
Replace the sensor.
OSS sensors thread or bolt into the rear of the transmission. Replacement takes 15–30 minutes. Use the correct OEM-equivalent part — generic sensors often produce weak signals.
-
Check reluctor ring if a new sensor does not work.
If the new sensor still produces no signal, the reluctor ring (target wheel inside the transmission) may have stripped teeth. This requires transmission removal — book professional service.
When to Call a Professional
P0722 is a no-signal fault and almost always points to a hardware issue you can diagnose with a multimeter. Sensor and wiring checks take 30 minutes. Professional repair costs USD 150–350 fitted for sensor and wiring repair. Reluctor ring damage requires transmission disassembly — USD 1,200+.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I drive with P0722?
Limp mode typically activates immediately, limiting the transmission to a single gear (often 3rd). Driving short distances to a repair shop is fine but extended driving is not safe — limp mode is not designed for highway speeds.
Why did P0722 appear after I changed the transmission fluid?
If P0722 set right after a fluid service, the technician may have left the OSS connector unplugged or damaged a wire while removing the pan. Return to the shop — the fix is usually quick and at no cost.
