P0773

Universal (All Makes) Vehicle (OBD-II)

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

P0773 means Shift Solenoid E has an electrical fault — open circuit, short circuit, or out-of-spec resistance. This solenoid is found on 5-speed and higher transmissions and typically controls 4-5 or 5-6 shifts. Symptoms include limp mode, missed upshifts, or the transmission stuck in a lower gear.

Affected Models

  • All vehicles with 5+ speed automatic transmissions
  • Common in GM 6L80, Ford 6R80, Chrysler 5/6-speed
  • Common in late-model Ford F-150 and Mustang
  • Common in GMC and Cadillac with 6L80

Common Causes

  • Open circuit in solenoid E coil
  • Short to ground or to power in solenoid E wiring
  • Failed solenoid (electrical failure mode)
  • Damaged connector pins at the transmission
  • TCM driver circuit failure (rare)

How to Fix It

  1. Pull freeze frame data.

Note when P0773 set — at start, mid-drive, after a hot restart? This narrows whether the fault is constant or temperature-related.

  2. Inspect the transmission connector.

On many vehicles the main transmission connector is exposed to road spray and corrodes. Disconnect, inspect for green oxidation, clean, and apply dielectric grease.

  3. Test solenoid E resistance.

Disconnect at the transmission and measure resistance between the solenoid E pins. Compare to manufacturer spec — typically 5–20 ohms. Out of spec confirms the solenoid.

  4. Test wiring continuity from connector to TCM.

An open or shorted wire produces the same code as a failed solenoid. Continuity test confirms whether the issue is the solenoid or wiring.

  5. Replace the solenoid or repair wiring.

Wiring repairs are usually cheaper than solenoid replacement. If the solenoid is bad, modern transmissions usually require pack replacement (multiple solenoids in one assembly).

When to Call a Professional

P0773 is an electrical fault that requires multimeter testing of the solenoid and wiring. DIY diagnosis is feasible for experienced mechanics. Solenoid replacement requires pan drop. Professional repair: USD 400–900 including fluid and gasket.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my transmission go into limp mode with P0773?

Often, yes. Limp mode protects the transmission when a solenoid cannot be controlled. The transmission limits to 2 or 3 gears. Driving in limp mode is OK for short distances but should be repaired promptly.

Why did P0773 set right after a transmission service?

Service-related P0773 usually means the solenoid connector was not fully reseated, or a wire was pinched during pan reinstallation. Return to the shop — the fix is usually quick and at no charge under their workmanship guarantee.
