P2100

OBD-II Diagnostic Code

Severity: Critical

What it means

P2100 means the electronic throttle body motor circuit is open — the ECM cannot control the throttle.
The car will likely go into limp mode with very limited power.
The throttle body, its wiring, or the ECM driver circuit may be faulty.

Affected Models

  • All OBD-II vehicles with electronic throttle control (2002+)

Common Causes

  • Throttle body motor failed
  • Wiring to throttle body disconnected or broken
  • Throttle body connector corroded
  • ECM throttle driver circuit failed
  • Throttle body carbon buildup preventing movement

How to Fix It

  1. Check the throttle body connector.

Unplug and inspect the connector for corrosion, bent pins, or damage.
    Clean with electrical contact cleaner.

  2. Test continuity in the throttle body wiring.

Check for open circuits between the ECM and throttle body connector.

  3. Clean or replace the throttle body.

Carbon buildup can prevent the throttle plate from moving, overloading the motor.
Cleaning with throttle body cleaner often resolves the issue.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is limp mode?

Limp mode limits engine power to protect the engine and drivetrain.
The car may only go 20-30 mph with very slow acceleration.

Can I clean the throttle body myself?

Yes.
Remove the air intake duct, spray throttle body cleaner inside, and wipe the plate and bore with a rag.
Do not push the plate open on electronic throttle bodies — let the motor do it.
