E1
Toto Bidet
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
E1 on a Toto Washlet means the instant water heater (which warms water on-demand for the wash) has failed.
Either the heating element burned out, the temperature sensor failed, or the controller can't drive the heater.
The seat still works for normal toilet use; only the warm-water wash function is affected.
This needs Toto authorized service — heater replacement is internal and complex.
Affected Models
- Toto Washlet S550e
- Toto Washlet S350e
- Toto Washlet S300e
- Toto Washlet C200
- Toto Washlet C100
Common Causes
- Instant heater element burned out (after 5+ years)
- Heater temperature sensor failed
- Controller heater driver damaged
- Mineral buildup in the heater coil (hard water areas)
- Power surge damaged the heater circuit
How to Fix It
-
Power-cycle the Washlet.
Find the GFCI outlet the Washlet plugs into.
Unplug for 60 seconds.
Plug back in.
Some E1 events are transient (controller glitch) and clear after a power cycle.
Test the wash function — if E1 doesn't return, you're back to normal. -
Verify it's not a temporary issue.
If E1 cleared with power cycle, monitor for recurrence over the next few uses.
If it returns, the issue is hardware.
If it doesn't return, you may have just had a one-off glitch — possibly from a brief power dip. -
Use cold water if the heater is failed.
Many Toto Washlets allow cold-water-only operation if the heater fails.
Set the water temperature to 'cold' or 'low' in settings.
The wand still works; you just won't have warm water.
This is a workaround until repair. -
Schedule Toto authorized service.
E1 indicates internal heater issues that aren't user-fixable on most Toto Washlets.
Contact Toto USA at 1-888-295-8134 (US) or your country's Toto support line.
They'll either schedule warranty service or refer you to a qualified plumber.
Out-of-warranty repair: 200-400 USD typical. -
Consider heater replacement vs new unit.
Toto Washlets typically last 8-10 years.
If yours is older and out of warranty, repair costs may approach the price of a new model.
Get a service quote before authorizing.
Newer Washlets (S550e, S350e) have better features than older S300/S400 models.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my toilet still flush with E1?
Yes — the Washlet is a separate seat assembly that doesn't affect toilet flushing.
The toilet itself works normally regardless of E1.
You'll just lose the warm wash function.
For temporary use, the toilet flushes and the seat warmer (if equipped) may still work — only the heater for water washing is affected.
Can hard water cause E1?
Yes — over years, mineral deposits coat the inside of the instant heater coil.
The deposits insulate, force the heater to work harder, and eventually it burns out.
Annual descaling (Toto recommends) extends life noticeably.
If your area has very hard water, consider a whole-house water softener.
