E5

Toto Bidet

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

E5 indicates an internal control board fault — the Washlet's main electronics have detected something wrong.
This is one of the more serious Toto codes.
Power-cycle once to confirm.
If E5 persists, the control board needs replacement.
Cost: 250-500 USD parts plus labor.
For older Washlets near 10 years, replacement of the whole unit may be more economical.

Affected Models

  • Toto Washlet S550e
  • Toto Washlet S350e
  • Toto Washlet S300e

Common Causes

  • Control board failed (most common)
  • Power surge damaged the processor or memory
  • Moisture damage from a leak
  • Internal flash memory corrupted
  • Component on the board (capacitor, MOSFET) failed

How to Fix It

  1. Power-cycle the Washlet.

Unplug from the GFCI outlet for 60 seconds.
    Plug back in.
    Let the Washlet boot fully.
Some E5 events are transient memory glitches that clear after a fresh boot.
If E5 returns, the issue is hardware.

  2. Check the GFCI outlet.

If the GFCI has tripped or is faulty, that can sometimes look like a controller fault.
Press Reset on the GFCI outlet.
If it won't stay reset, the GFCI itself may have failed and needs an electrician.
This is uncommon but worth ruling out.

  3. Note any recent events.

Has there been a thunderstorm, brief power outage, or any leak near the toilet recently?
Power surges damage control board chips.
Moisture damage is also common in bathroom installations.
Note for the service tech — informs which parts to test first.

  4. Don't disassemble the Washlet.

The control board is inside the seat assembly, surrounded by water lines and electronics.
Disassembly risks damaging seals and creating leaks.
    This is genuinely service-tech-only work.
    Don't attempt DIY.

  5. Decide repair vs replace.

Washlet under 5 years: repair the board (250-500 USD).
Washlet over 8 years and out of warranty: replacement of the whole unit may be more economical.

Newer S550e and S350e have noticeably better features than older S300 series.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the toilet still flush?

Yes — the toilet flushing system is separate from the Washlet electronics.
The toilet itself works normally regardless of E5.
You just lose the seat features (wash, dry, heated seat) until the Washlet is repaired.

Can a surge protector prevent E5?

Yes — for surge-related E5 events, a small inline surge protector at the GFCI outlet protects the board from voltage spikes.
Cost: 15-30 USD.
Worth installing in storm-prone areas.
Won't help with end-of-life component failures, but adds insurance.
