No Sound

Bose Bluetooth Speaker

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A Bose speaker with no sound is usually caused by the volume being at zero on the source device, audio being routed to a different Bluetooth output, or a Bluetooth audio profile mismatch. Check both the speaker volume (buttons on the speaker) and the media volume on your phone.

Affected Models

  • Bose SoundLink Flex
  • Bose SoundLink Max
  • Bose SoundLink Mini II
  • Bose SoundLink Revolve+
  • Bose Portable Home Speaker
  • Bose Smart Speaker 300
  • Bose Smart Speaker 500

Common Causes

  • Media volume at zero on the connected phone or tablet
  • Phone audio routed to car, earbuds, or another Bluetooth device instead of Bose
  • Bluetooth connection using HFP only (call audio) instead of A2DP (media audio)
  • Bose speaker in auxiliary input mode rather than Bluetooth mode
  • Firmware crash — speaker needs a power cycle

How to Fix It

  1. Press Volume Up on both the Bose speaker and the source device.

Bose speakers have independent volume from the connected phone. Press the + button on the speaker several times. Also increase media volume on your phone separately. On iPhone: use the side buttons while audio is playing. On Android: long-press the volume rocker to see all volume channels.

  2. Confirm the speaker is in Bluetooth mode, not Aux or Wi-Fi mode.

Bose Portable Home Speaker and Smart Speakers can switch between Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Aux input. If the speaker is in Aux mode with nothing plugged into the Aux port, or in Wi-Fi mode waiting for a stream, Bluetooth audio will not play. Press the Bluetooth button to switch to Bluetooth mode.

  3. Check which device has audio focus.

Smartphones route audio to only one output at a time. If your phone is also connected to a car stereo, smartwatch, or earbuds, one of those devices may have claimed audio focus. Disconnect other Bluetooth audio devices from your phone and test again.

  4. Power cycle the Bose speaker.

Turn the speaker off completely, wait 15 seconds, and power it back on. A firmware state error that prevents audio output is cleared on restart. Reconnect Bluetooth after the speaker powers on.

  5. Check the Bose Connect app for the active input source.

In the Bose Connect app, verify the speaker shows as connected to your device and that the audio source is Bluetooth. The app also shows firmware version — update if available, as audio bugs are fixed in firmware releases.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Bose speaker say connected but my phone plays through its speakers instead?

This means Bluetooth connected (the pairing handshake succeeded) but the media audio profile (A2DP) was not established correctly. Turn phone Bluetooth off and on to force a fresh connection. If the problem recurs consistently, forget the pairing and re-pair.

My Bose speaker distorts at high volume — is that a fault?

Distortion at maximum volume is normal for compact speakers — the driver cannot move enough air cleanly at that output level. Reduce volume to 80% and test. If distortion is present at moderate volume, the driver may be damaged — contact Bose support.
