Not Pairing

Bose Bluetooth Speaker

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

A Bose speaker that will not pair is almost always already connected to another device or not in pairing mode. Slide or press the Bluetooth button to enter pairing mode — the speaker will say 'Ready to pair' or the LED will flash white. If the speaker still does not appear on your device, clear the speaker's Bluetooth memory.

Affected Models

  • Bose SoundLink Flex
  • Bose SoundLink Max
  • Bose SoundLink Mini II
  • Bose SoundLink Revolve+
  • Bose Portable Home Speaker
  • Bose Smart Speaker 300
  • Bose Smart Speaker 500

Common Causes

  • Speaker auto-connected to a previously paired device
  • Speaker not in pairing mode — not actively discoverable
  • Bose speaker memory full — stores 8 paired devices; oldest removed when full
  • Bose Connect app showing device as connected to another account
  • Phone Bluetooth cache preventing discovery

How to Fix It

  1. Put the speaker into Bluetooth pairing mode.

If the speaker just powered on and connected to a previous device, press and hold the Bluetooth button for 2 seconds. The speaker will disconnect from the current device and enter pairing mode. You will hear 'Ready to pair' or see the Bluetooth LED flashing white rapidly.

  2. Remove the speaker from the Bose Connect app if previously managed there.

If you use the Bose Connect app and the speaker is registered there, pairing from a new device may require first removing the speaker from the app on the old device, or using the app to manually disconnect it.

  3. Forget the speaker on your phone and re-pair.

Go to your phone's Bluetooth settings, find the Bose speaker, tap Forget or Unpair. Then trigger pairing mode on the speaker and connect fresh. This is the most reliable fix for speakers that show as paired but will not connect.

  4. Clear the speaker's Bluetooth memory.

To clear all paired devices from a Bose SoundLink speaker: while the speaker is on, slide the power switch to the Bluetooth symbol and hold it for 10 seconds (older models) — or hold the Bluetooth button for 10 seconds (newer models) until you hear 'Bluetooth device list cleared'. The exact method varies by model — check your Bose manual.

  5. Update the speaker firmware via the Bose Connect app.

Outdated Bose speaker firmware occasionally causes Bluetooth connectivity issues. Install the Bose Connect app, connect to the speaker, and check for firmware updates. Bose regularly releases updates that improve pairing stability.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset a Bose SoundLink speaker?

For Bose SoundLink Flex: hold the Power button for 10 seconds until the LED flashes white, then release. For Bose SoundLink Mini II: hold the Power button and Volume Down button simultaneously for 10 seconds. For Bose SoundLink Revolve: hold the Multi-function button for 10 seconds. After a reset, the speaker clears its pairings and enters pairing mode.

Why does my Bose speaker keep connecting to my old phone instead of my new one?

Bose speakers connect to the most recently used paired device automatically. Turn off Bluetooth on your old phone (or move it out of range) so it cannot claim the speaker first. Alternatively, hold the Bluetooth button on the speaker for 2 seconds to force it into pairing mode for your new phone.
