Voice Assistant Not Responding
Bose Bluetooth Speaker
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Check that the microphone is not muted — Bose smart speakers have a microphone mute button that disables voice assistant listening completely. If the mic is active, check whether the speaker is connected to Wi-Fi — Alexa and Google Assistant require an internet connection.
Affected Models
- Bose Portable Smart Speaker
- Bose Smart Speaker 500
- Bose Smart Soundbar 300
- Bose Smart Soundbar 900
Common Causes
- Microphone muted via the mute button on the speaker
- Speaker not connected to Wi-Fi — voice assistants need internet access
- Alexa or Google Assistant account not linked in the Bose Music app
- Wake word not detected due to background noise
- Outdated firmware with voice processing bugs
How to Fix It
-
Check the microphone mute button.
Most Bose smart speakers have a dedicated microphone mute button. When muted, the speaker shows a red or orange light and ignores voice commands completely. Press the mic button to unmute.
-
Verify the speaker is connected to Wi-Fi.
In the Bose Music app → your speaker → check the Wi-Fi symbol. Alexa and Google Assistant require a live internet connection. Bluetooth-only mode disables them.
-
Re-link your voice assistant account.
Open the Bose Music app → Settings → Voice Assistants → unlink then relink your Amazon or Google account. Token expiry or account changes sometimes break the connection.
-
Speak clearly and close to the speaker.
The wake word detector needs 'Alexa' or 'Hey Google' spoken clearly within about 2 metres. Background music playing on the speaker itself can mask the wake word — pause music first when testing.
-
Update firmware and restart the speaker.
Go to Bose Music app → Settings → Software Updates. After updating, power the speaker off and back on to reinitialise the voice assistant service.
When to Call a Professional
If the microphone mute button has no effect and the voice assistant never activates, the microphone array may be faulty. Contact Bose support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Alexa responds to the wake word but says 'I'm having trouble connecting' — why?
This is a Wi-Fi or Amazon account issue, not a speaker problem. Check that your home Wi-Fi is working and that your Amazon account is still linked in the Bose app.
Can I use Google Assistant and Alexa on the same Bose speaker?
Some Bose smart speakers support switching between assistants. Only one can be the default at a time. Configure this in the Bose Music app under Settings → Voice Assistants.
