Firmware Update Failed
Bose Bluetooth Speaker
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Keep your phone close to the speaker and on stable Wi-Fi during the update — Bose firmware downloads through your phone's internet connection. If the update fails, power-cycle the speaker and retry through the Bose Music app.
Affected Models
- Bose SoundLink Flex
- Bose SoundLink Max
- Bose SoundLink Revolve / Revolve+
- Bose Portable Smart Speaker
Common Causes
- Wi-Fi connection dropped during the firmware download
- Phone moved out of Bluetooth range mid-update
- Speaker battery too low to accept an update
- Bose app version outdated and incompatible with the new firmware
- Bose update servers temporarily unavailable
How to Fix It
-
Charge the speaker to at least 50% before updating.
Bose speakers often refuse firmware updates if battery is below 20–30%. Plug in the charging cable and wait until the battery indicator shows at least half charge.
-
Keep your phone close and on stable Wi-Fi.
Place the phone within 1 metre of the speaker and ensure it is on a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network with a strong signal. The firmware file downloads through your phone's internet connection.
-
Force-quit and reopen the Bose Music app.
If the update appears stuck (progress bar frozen for more than 5 minutes), close the app completely, wait 30 seconds, and reopen it. The app will detect the interrupted update and offer to retry.
-
Power-cycle the speaker and retry.
Turn the speaker off and back on. Open the Bose Music app, reconnect the speaker, and go to Settings → Software Updates to restart the process.
-
Update the Bose Music app itself.
An outdated Bose app can fail to push firmware correctly. Go to the App Store or Google Play → update the Bose Music app → then retry the speaker firmware update.
When to Call a Professional
If the speaker is completely unresponsive (no lights, no sound) after a failed update, contact Bose support — a hard recovery may require service.
Frequently Asked Questions
My Bose speaker is completely dead after a failed update — what now?
A failed update that leaves the speaker unresponsive is a bricked state. This is rare but does happen. Contact Bose support — some models can be recovered with a special USB tool that only Bose technicians have.
How long should a Bose firmware update take?
Typically 3–8 minutes depending on your Wi-Fi speed. If progress is frozen for more than 10 minutes, the update has stalled — force-quit the app and retry.
