ERR:MEMORY
Texas Instruments TI-84 Calculator
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
TI-84 ERR:MEMORY means the calculator has run out of available RAM to complete an operation. The TI-84 Plus has 24 KB of user RAM. Free up memory by archiving programs to flash memory, deleting unused variables and lists, or clearing the statistical memory (STAT → Edit → clear lists).
Affected Models
- TI-84 Plus
- TI-84 Plus Silver Edition
- TI-84 Plus CE
- TI-84 Plus CE-T
- TI-83 Plus
Common Causes
- Too many programs stored in RAM — programs should be archived to flash when not in use
- Large lists (L1–L6) storing thousands of data points
- Multiple matrix variables with large dimensions
- Equation solver or table building with a very large step count consuming RAM
- Applications (Apps) installed in flash memory using the available archive space
How to Fix It
-
Check available RAM.
Press 2nd → MEM → 1: About. The screen shows 'RAM Free' and 'ARC Free' (archive). RAM Free is the immediately usable memory. ARC Free is the flash archive space. If RAM Free is under 1000 bytes, archiving programs is needed.
-
Archive programs to flash memory.
Press 2nd → MEM → 2: Mem Mgmt/Del → 7: Prgm. Use the arrow keys to highlight programs you do not need immediately. Press ENTER to archive each one — a star (*) appears next to archived programs. This moves them from RAM to flash without deleting them.
-
Delete unused variables and lists.
Press 2nd → MEM → 2: Mem Mgmt/Del → 5: Real (for variables) or 4: List. Highlight any variable or list that is no longer needed and press DEL. Confirm the deletion.
-
Clear statistical lists.
Large lists in the STAT editor are a common memory consumer. Press STAT → 1: Edit, then use the arrow keys to move to the L1 header (top of the column) and press CLEAR → ENTER. Repeat for each list. This removes all stored data from that list.
-
Delete unused matrices and equations.
Press 2nd → MEM → 2: Mem Mgmt/Del → 6: Matrix to delete stored matrices. Also check 2: Y-Vars and clear any equations stored in Y1–Y9 that are not needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between RAM and archive memory on a TI-84?
RAM (24 KB) is working memory — variables, running programs, and temporary data use RAM. Archive (flash) memory (about 1.5 MB) stores programs and data long-term but they must be unarchived before use. ERR:MEMORY always refers to RAM running out, not archive space.
Will clearing RAM delete my operating system?
No. The TI-84 operating system is stored in protected ROM and cannot be deleted by clearing RAM. Clearing RAM only removes user data: variables, programs, lists, and matrices. The calculator remains functional with all built-in functions after a RAM clear.
