Read Error

Fujifilm Camera

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

'Read Error' means the camera can't read data from the SD card — usually because the file system is corrupted or the card has failed.
Power off, remove the card, try in a computer to check if data is salvageable.
Don't format yet if you have important photos — recovery software may help.
Once data is safe, format the card in the camera or replace if it's failed.

Affected Models

  • Fujifilm X-T4/T5
  • Fujifilm X-S10/S20
  • Fujifilm X-H2/H2S
  • Fujifilm X-T30 II
  • Fujifilm X-Pro 3

Common Causes

  • File system corrupted on the card
  • Card pulled while writing (improper removal)
  • Card failed (end of life — limited write cycles)
  • Card incompatible with this Fujifilm body
  • Camera's card slot contacts dirty

How to Fix It

  1. Power off the camera.

    Turn the camera off completely.
Wait 10 seconds before removing the card.
Don't pull the card with the access light on — that's how cards get corrupted.

  2. Test the card in a computer.

Insert the card into a computer with an SD adapter.
    Can the computer read it?
If yes, the card may just need reformatting (after backing up).
If the computer can't read it, the card has a serious file system or hardware issue.

  3. Recover photos if needed.

If the card has photos you want to keep, use recovery software (PhotoRec is free and effective).
    Run recovery on the card.
Save recovered photos to your computer's drive (don't write back to the same card).
Once photos are safe, you can format.

  4. Format the card in the camera.

After backing up: Menu → Setup → Format Card.
    Confirm.
The camera erases everything and rebuilds the file system.
This often clears Read Error events caused by file system corruption.

  5. Replace the card if format fails.

If formatting fails or Read Error returns immediately after, the card is failed.
Replace with a fresh card from a major brand (SanDisk, Sony, Lexar).
For Fujifilm bodies that support video, use V60 or V90 cards for reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do SD cards last?

SD cards have limited write cycles — typically 100,000 to 1 million per cell.
For typical photography use, that's 5-10 years.
Heavy video shooters wear cards out faster.
If your card has been working for 3+ years and starts showing Read Error, it's near end of life — replace as preventative.

Why does Read Error happen during burst shooting?

Sometimes — if the card can't keep up with the buffer write speed.
This usually shows as Write Error rather than Read Error, but a struggling card can fail in various ways.
Use V60 or V90 cards for high-speed Fujifilm bodies.
Slow cards trigger errors during heavy use.
