Write Error
Fujifilm Camera
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
'Write Error' means the camera couldn't write data to the SD card — either the card is too slow, full, write-protected, or failing.
Check the card lock switch first.
If unlocked and there's space, try a known-good faster card.
If a fresh card works, your original is too slow or failing.
If Write Error appears with any card, the camera's card slot has a fault.
Affected Models
- Fujifilm X-T4/T5
- Fujifilm X-S10/S20
- Fujifilm X-H2/H2S
- Fujifilm X-T30 II
- Fujifilm X-Pro 3
Common Causes
- Card lock switch enabled (read-only mode)
- Card too slow for buffer write speed
- Card full or near-full
- Card failing (end of life)
- Camera card slot contacts dirty
How to Fix It
-
Check the card lock switch.
Eject the card.
Look at the side of the card for a small slider (lock switch).
If in the LOCKED position, the camera can read but not write — that's your Write Error.
Slide to UNLOCKED.
Reinsert and test. -
Check available space.
If the card is full or near-full, Write Error can appear with a confusing message.
Either delete unwanted photos or insert a fresh card.
For long shoots, carry multiple cards rather than relying on one large card. -
Test with a faster card.
If you've been using a slow card and Write Error appears during burst shooting or video, the card can't keep up.
Try a V60 or V90 card.
Modern Fujifilm bodies (X-T5, X-H2) need V60 minimum for high-speed burst and 4K video.
For 8K video on X-H2: V90 minimum or CFexpress. -
Format and try again.
If the card has space, isn't locked, and is fast enough but Write Error still appears: Menu → Format Card.
Backup any photos first.
Format rebuilds the file system and often clears file-system-related Write Errors.
Test after format. -
Try a different card or send to Fujifilm service.
If a brand-new V60 or V90 card still triggers Write Error, the camera's card slot is the problem.
Fujifilm service can replace the card slot — usually 200–400 USD.
For older bodies, weigh against replacement cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Write Error damage my photos?
Photos already saved to the card before the error are usually safe.
The shot that triggered Write Error is lost.
If you continue using the card after Write Error, you risk corrupting the file system, which CAN affect previously saved photos.
Stop using and address the cause.
Why does Write Error happen during video?
Video has a sustained high write rate — the card has to write continuously without pauses.
Slow cards that work fine for stills can fail during video.
4K video requires V30 minimum; high-bitrate 4K and 8K need V60 or V90.
Match your card speed to your camera's video capability.
