File Repair Needed

GoPro Action Camera

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

'File Repair Needed' means the last recording was interrupted (battery died, card removed, sudden power loss) and the file is incomplete.
The camera offers to fix it.
Press the shutter button to confirm repair.
This takes 30-90 seconds depending on file size.
Most repairs succeed and you keep the recording — minus a few seconds at the end.

Affected Models

  • GoPro HERO 10/11/12 Black
  • GoPro HERO 9
  • GoPro HERO 8 Black
  • GoPro MAX

Common Causes

  • Battery died during recording
  • SD card removed while writing
  • Sudden power loss (camera dropped, water shutdown)
  • GoPro app crashed during recording
  • Internal firmware crash mid-record

How to Fix It

  1. Press the shutter button to confirm repair.

When the prompt appears, press the shutter button (top of camera) once.
The camera begins repairing the file.
Don't power off, don't remove the SD card, don't press buttons during repair.
Wait until completion (status display will update).

  2. Wait for repair to complete.

30-90 seconds is typical, depending on file size.
4K and 5K files take longer.
Don't interrupt — interrupting a repair can corrupt the file beyond recovery.
The camera shows progress on screen.

  3. Check the repaired file.

After repair, view the latest video in the gallery.
It should play normally up to where the recording was interrupted.
You'll lose the last 1-3 seconds typically — that's the data the camera couldn't write before the interrupt.

  4. Check what caused the interrupt.

Battery died: charge fully before next session, or carry spares.
Card removed: don't pull cards while recording.
Power loss: protect the camera from drops or water (use waterproof housing if needed).
Knowing the cause prevents repeat events.

  5. If repair fails, try the GoPro app.

If the camera says repair failed, connect to GoPro app and try downloading the file.
Sometimes the desktop GoPro Player or VLC media player can play files the camera couldn't repair.
Worst case the file is unrecoverable — backup other files before reformatting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I lose the whole recording?

Usually no — most repairs succeed and you keep the video minus a few seconds at the end.
Repairs only fail completely if power was lost very early in the recording (before file structure was established).
For multi-minute recordings, you almost always keep most of it.

Can I prevent file repair events?

Yes:
1. Charge fully before sessions.
2. Carry spare batteries for long shoots.
3. Don't remove SD cards while recording (or while the access light is on).
4. Use waterproof housing if water is a risk.
5. Update firmware regularly — newer firmware has better recovery handling.
