No SD Card

GoPro Action Camera

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

'No SD Card' means the GoPro can't detect the inserted card.
Either the card isn't seated fully, the contacts are dirty, the card is incompatible, or the card has failed.
Power off, remove the card, inspect the gold contacts on both card and slot, and reinsert firmly.
If the card still isn't detected, try a different known-good card to isolate.

Affected Models

  • GoPro HERO 10/11/12 Black
  • GoPro HERO 9
  • GoPro HERO 8 Black
  • GoPro MAX

Common Causes

  • Card not fully seated in the slot
  • Card contacts dirty or corroded
  • Card incompatible with this GoPro model
  • Card failed (end of life)
  • GoPro card slot damaged

How to Fix It

  1. Power off the camera.

Hold the mode button until the camera shuts down.
Wait 10 seconds before opening the card slot.
Pulling cards from a powered camera can corrupt them and isn't a clean operation.

  2. Open the side door and remove the card.

Open the side door of the GoPro carefully.
Push the card to release the spring mechanism, then pull straight out.
Look at the gold contacts on the back of the card — should be clean and shiny.

  3. Clean the card contacts.

Wipe the gold contacts with a clean dry microfiber cloth.
If they're discolored or have visible residue, use a pencil eraser very gently.
    Don't use chemicals or moisture.
Look in the GoPro card slot too — clean any visible debris with compressed air.

  4. Reinsert firmly.

Push the card back into the slot until it clicks.
Don't force — if it won't click, you have it oriented wrong.
The contacts face down (toward the camera body) on most GoPro models.
Close the side door fully (the latch should engage).

  5. Try a different card to isolate.

If the original card still isn't detected, try a known-good card.
If the new card works, your original card has failed.
If neither card is detected, the GoPro slot is damaged — contact GoPro support for warranty service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What SD cards are compatible with my GoPro?

HERO 10/11/12: V30 minimum, V60 or V90 for highest bitrates (5.3K 60fps).
HERO 9: V30 minimum.
HERO 8: U3 V30 minimum.
HERO 7: U3 minimum.
Check GoPro's compatibility list — using non-recommended cards can cause No SD Card or recording errors during use.

Why does my brand-new card show 'No SD Card'?

Likely card compatibility — not all SD cards work with all GoPros.
Particularly cheap unbranded cards.
Stick with major brands (SanDisk Extreme, Samsung Pro+, Lexar Professional) and confirm V30/V60/V90 spec for your model.
Format the card in the GoPro after first insertion.
